What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transit Mechanic position at City of Danville?
Performs difficult skilled, technical work, repairing and maintaining the fleet of Transportation Department buses. Checks and services brakes; services air conditioning; changes engine oil and transmission fluid; checks and repairs all drive line parts and components; maintains wheelchair lifts; repairs and installs additional parts and components. Performs regular services and inspections; checks bus and driver reports; and completes all work orders and reports. Performs road calls to diagnose broken down buses and ensures buses are towed to the shop for repairs.

The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.- Services Transportation Department fleet by operating specialized automotive diagnostic testing equipment including electronic meters and electronic trouble shooting equipment; determining the mechanical problems, utilizing the test data; determining required repair and/or replacement of parts, and initiating the repair; and performing preventive maintenance inspections.
- Maintains Transportation Department fleet by making repairs to brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, and electrical systems; tuning and adjusting engines using specialized and standard test equipment; performing diversified electrical and electronic work on Transit equipment; troubleshooting problems and repairing or replacing defective parts; performing preventive maintenance inspections; repairing air conditioning systems; and repairing hydraulic lifts.
- Records repairs on work orders; transport vehicles to and from outside servicers; attends a variety of courses and seminars to maintain technical knowledge and skills, including maintenance of buses in order to comply with federal and state Department of Transportation standards; operates wrecker when needed; maintains tool shop and work area in clean and orderly state; works with outside vendors for repair of vehicles under warranty or other repairs.
- Performs on call duty as assigned.
- Provides emergency response during severe weather (snow, floods, and storms).

Associate’s Degree, with knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative or technical nature, and over six years of experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid Driver’s License (CDL – Class A) with Hazmat endorsements and acceptable driving record according to City Criteria.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in shop, where there is daily exposure to respiratory and physical hazards, extreme temperatures, and noise and vibration. There is constant exposure to mechanical hazards, and frequent exposure to chemical and fire hazards. There is occasional exposure to communicable diseases, and seasonal exposure to wetness/humidity.
The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel toe shoes, hearing and eye protection, etc.); and any other equipment as apparent or assigned.
