What are the responsibilities and job description for the PT Fitness Center Associate position at City of Daphne?
The purpose of this classification is to perform entry-level work involving operation of the fitness center, to include preparing the facility for use by patrons, instructing patrons in use of fitness center equipment, designing exercise programs for members of the fitness center, cleaning and maintaining the facility and its equipment, and performing related tasks.
- Supervises and instructs patrons in the proper use of selected weight machines, cardiovascular equipment, free weights, and pre-exercise warm-up/stretching routine.
- Provides equipment orientation and instruction to patrons.
- Ensures adherence to established safety procedures, to fitness center policies and procedures, and all applicable laws, rules regulations, standards, policies and procedures; monitors environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of patrons, visitors, employees, and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Provides basic first aid in the event of an injury until appropriate medical or emergency personnel can arrive on scene to provide professional assistance.
- Greets and assists members with goals so they can be reached in safe, incremental manner.
- Serves as facility contact before and after traditional business hours; opens and secures building(s) at closing time.
- Collects payments and issues receipts for the monthly gym membership dues; submits monies to the Recreation Program Manager for deposit.
- Recommends repairs, improvements, and additions to fitness equipment to the Recreation Program Manager.
- Represents the department in matters relating to fitness.
- Operates weight training machines, cardio equipment, heart monitors, a personal computer, and general office equipment,.
- Maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
- Knowledge of gym equipment and its safe usage practices.
- Skill in operating, maneuvering and/or controlling the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
- Ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; ability to interpret graphs.
- Ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
- Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by previous experience and/or training involving fitness center management, physical education, athletic training, fitness health, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama driver’s license; valid American Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires the ability to life or handle 40 pounds, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials; may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an indoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
