Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in a variety of horticultural activities, and performs related work as required.

Qualifications
Associate's degree in ornamental horticulture, floriculture, or related field plus two (2) years of commercial horticultural or landscaping experience; or high school diploma or GED equivalent plus four (4) years of commercial horticultural or landscaping experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the required work in this position.
Must possess a valid driver's license upon application, obtain a Commercial Driver's License Permit (CDLP) within 30 days of appointment and obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement within 90 days of appointment and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must obtain pesticide applicators certification within six months of hire.
Must pass a physical examination and background check as prescribed by the city. All CDL personnel are subject to Federal Motor Carriers Random Drug & Alcohol Program.
Must reside in Iowa or Illinois within two (2) years of hire and maintain residency throughout the duration of employment.
Knowledge and Skills
Considerable knowledge of :
A wide variety of annuals, perennials, ornamental trees and shrubs and their use in display gardening.
Practical gardening techniques and the methods, tools and equipment used in propagating, raising and caring for flowers and ornamental plants in display gardens.
Floricultural crops, their production cycles and treatment for disease and insects.
Identification and treatment of insects and diseases for ornamentals and turf.
Federal laws regulating the handling and application of pesticides.
Operation and care of equipment and tools.
Occupational hazards and proper safety precautions.
Considerable skill in :
Mixing and applying pesticides and fertilizers.
Methods and practices of crop propagation, germination, and cultivation.
