DEFINITION
 
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks for the City’s pool maintenance program; ensures aquatics facilities are available for use and consistently maintained in a safe and clean condition; maintains pool operational equipment such as pumps, motors, and filters; maintains pool chemistry, and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
 
Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.  
 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This journey-level classification is responsible for performing the full range of aquatics facility maintenance functions. Performance requires the ability to work independently with initiative and discretion within established guidelines. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only)
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks for the aquatic maintenance program, requiring proficiency in pool-related plumbing, maintenance, chemical treatment, and water testing; ensures aquatics facilities are available for use and consistently maintained in a safe and clean condition. 
  • Ensures pool systems operate in accordance with mandated requirements including the operation and maintenance of pool heaters, pumps, motors, chlorination equipment, chemical feed systems, storage tanks, underwater lights, vacuuming pools, and pool fittings and valves; calibrates equipment as needed. 
  • Treats water with chemicals to maintain safe and healthy water quality; monitors chemical usage and cleans probes and chemical injectors.
  • Performs mechanical inspections and repairs to pool pumps, filters, chemical pumps, and chemical feed lines; performs minor electrical, plumbing, masonry, and carpentry work.  
  • Drives vehicles used to transport materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Provides initial response to calls for service from aquatics staff; assesses maintenance needs and takes corrective action or initiates work orders for appropriate support and ensures timely completion. 
  • Monitors inventory, orders supplies, and maintains purchase records within authorized budget. 
  • Maintains records of pool testing results and actions/adjustments taken, temperature, and chemicals added; documents general maintenance activities. 
  • Assists in the evaluation of maintenance needs and reports same to supervisor; 
  • Ensures compliance with State, County, and local Health and Safety Codes pertaining to the operation of public swimming pools and recommends corrections to the supervisor.
  • Participates in all safety programs required to effectively perform associated job requirements.
  • Performs building maintenance duties such as painting, minor plumbing, concrete work, and other related maintenance or custodial tasks; as assigned, performs grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Knowledge of:
 
  • Methods and techniques used in the operation, repair, and maintenance of swimming pools, equipment, and facilities.
  • Operational characteristics of pool equipment, such as pumps, motors, chemical feeders, underwater lights, and related apparatus.
  • Principles and practices of pool water testing and proper chemical water treatments.
  • Principles and practices of building and grounds maintenance and associated trades such as carpentry or masonry work.
  • Hazards associated with the work and proper safety precautions.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws pertaining to the work including health and safety codes.
  • Purposes and uses of a variety of equipment, power tools, hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Principles and practices of work safety.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively interacting with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.
 
Ability to:
 
  • Perform the full range of semi-skilled and skilled aquatics facility maintenance. 
  • Provide proper maintenance and inspections of aquatics facilities and equipment as required by regulations. 
  • Operate and maintain pool mechanical equipment including, but not limited to, pumps, motors, water filtration equipment chlorine generators and pool vacuums.
  • Maintain water chemistry in compliance with health and safety requirements.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. 
  • Safely operate power-driven construction tools and equipment. 
  • Ensure the safety of patrons, colleagues, and self in the performance of duties.
  • Obtain certifications as required by OSHA/CalOSHA and provided by the City, to perform assigned duties.
  • Perform minor building, custodial, and grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles, equipment (including forklift), power tools, and other equipment in a safe manner.
  • Assist in selecting materials and estimating material and labor costs for a job or project.
  • Read and interpret plans, specifications, maps, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to effectively perform the work.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 
 
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education:
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by specialized training in aquatics facility and pool maintenance or a related field.
Experience:
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible aquatics facility maintenance experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
 
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within the probationary period, a valid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or similar to be maintained throughout employment.
  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within the probationary period, a valid certification in American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED to be maintained throughout employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to work in a field and aquatics facility environment; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; vision to detect shades of color and distinguish wiring, read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in pool and deck operational areas, which may be slippery with water, to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard and to operate tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb and descend ladders, operate hand tools, and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment and assistance from other staff. 

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees work in the field and an aquatics pool facility and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes.  Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS
 
May be required to work various shifts or emergencies on evenings, weekends, and holidays.
