What are the responsibilities and job description for the Swim Instructor (2025) position at City of Davis?
The City of Davis provides swim lessons to participants of all ages and abilities in a safe and exciting aquatic experience. The Swim Instructor position is responsible for providing safe swim instruction, demonstration of proper holds and support, ability to teach and encourage participants of all ages and abilities, and foster an enjoyable experience in the water. Swim instruction may take place at either Manor Pool or Arroyo Pool.
Hourly wage: SWIM INSTRUCTOR (CSS I) $16.55-$16.97 per hour
Temporary Part-Time, No benefits. Applicants will be screened according to most relevant experience for this position. Those most qualified will be invited to an individual or small group interview.
Training Dates: Mandatory staff trainings are held the weekend of May 10 and 11 and the week of June 16 – June 20. All Staff and Swim Instructor specific training days will be scheduled every other Friday morning. Any planned vacation must be approved by management before the summer session and fit within one two-week summer swim session.
- Week-long spring swim lessons are scheduled from May 19 – June 5 (instructors must be available from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. for three of the four spring weeks).
- Two-week summer swim lessons are scheduled from June 23 – August 14 (instructors must be available from 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and/or 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday)
- Weekend swim lessons are scheduled from June 21 – August 17 (instructors must be available from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
- Teach group and private swim lessons to all ages and ability levels
- Know and understand each swimming skill level and the skills that are taught
- Create a fun and inviting learning environment to ensure a positive experience for participants
- Complete progress reports for students in classes
- Participate in all trainings
- Work efficiently with co-instructors and managers
- Communicates with supervisory program staff regarding participant behavior, injuries, and other relevant matters
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Must be 15 years of age or older (or 14 if applicant has completed the Jr. Swim Instructor Program)
- Must be comfortable in the water. A good swimmer with competitive swimming background is preferred
- Experience teaching or working with children (examples include but are not limited to: babysitting, academic/athletic tutoring, camp counselor, youth volunteer, classroom assistant).
This is an active position requiring the ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 lbs.; occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 100 lbs.; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects, and make observations. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, often over 100 degrees, sun, noise, dust, and pollens. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Slip hazards when working near water. Must be able to complete additional trainings, including but not limited to: Concussion Training, Blood Borne Pathogens, Mandated Reporter, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Heat Illness, Covid Safety, Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
