JOB TITLE: Patrol Officer

REPORTS TO: Police Chief (or Designee)

JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Dawson is looking for a Patrol Officer to serve the citizens by providing services in order to protect life and property, to respond to the needs of the general public, to deter criminal activity within the city of Dawson, to enforce all state and local ordinances and laws, and protect the constitutional rights of all citizens. This work involves responsibility for participating in patrol, complaint and crime investigation and traffic control duties during an assigned shift. The work may involve personal danger and require the employee to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. This work is performed under general supervision from a superior who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection and discussions.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Patrol the city on foot or in a radio cruiser car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic at school crossings and street intersections, and enforce vehicle operation and parking regulations.
  • Check doors and windows and examines premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect any suspicious conditions
  • Participate in traffic law enforcement by patrolling, directing traffic, issuing citations to violators, escorting special processing and the performance of other duties.
  • Responds to accident calls; gathers information at the accident scene; investigates and reconstructs serious injury or fatal accidents; interviews victims and witnesses; investigates hit and run accidents; notifies relatives of victims as necessary.
  • Performs surveillance of various locations and of criminal suspects; collects and reviews data; develops trends and/or patterns pertaining to locations/suspects; files intelligence reports.
  • Accompanies prisoners to headquarters and jail and may testify in court.
  • Interview persons with complaints, inquiries, and attempt to make proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities in a timely manner.
  • Investigates reported crimes; interviews and obtains statements from victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; processes & maintain crime scenes; gathers, prepares, protects, and submits evidence to crime lab.
  • Interviews suspects, prisoners, complainants, and witnesses to obtain information about crimes
  • Determines probable cause to search and/or reasonable suspicion to detain suspects; pursues fleeing and subdues resisting suspects; makes arrests when and where necessary; processes and transports prisoners.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports for various cases; prepare supplemental reports; appear in court to present evidence and testimony as required as well performing other clerical and administrative duties.
  • Assist federal state, and county officials in their work when called upon.
  • Maintain surveillance over persons and places suspected of illegal operations and takes necessary action as evidence warrants.
  • Operate emergency vehicles on hazardous road conditions and during high-speed pursuits and responses
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement and crime prevention.
  • Performs other duties as needed, assigned or required.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Chief of Police or his designated subordinates assigns work in terms of departmental goals and objectives. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of departmental activities.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has no management or Supervisory Responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be a Georgia certified Police Officer or eligible for Georgia POST Certification. Must have a valid Driver’s License. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of people or within court setting.
