What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter position at City of Dayton?
Minimum Education
High school graduate (or G.E.D.).
Minimum Experience
Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in both Fire and EMS at time of application.
Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
Certifications
Applicants must have satisfactorily completed the required Fire Fighter Level I and Level II training curriculum set forth by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. A copy of the certificate must be presented at the time of application. Applicants must be Ohio Paramedic certified. A copy of the certificate must be presented at the time of application.
Firefighter / Paramedics hired through the Lateral Transfer process must maintain Ohio Department of Public Safety certification as a Firefighter Level II and as a Paramedic as a condition of employment.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.
Special Requirements
Firefighters / Paramedics hired through the lateral process must attend and successfully complete an accelerated Training Academy as determined by the Dayton Fire Department.
Must pass such physical examination as deemed necessary by the Civil Service Board.
Wage Considerations
In accordance with the 2024-2026 I.A.F.F. contract, when the City hires new Fire / EMS personnel, who were City employees, or who were Fire / EMS personnel with another employer, the newly hired employees will move to the step rate of pay that is closest to, but higher than, their current rate of pay. If the external is paid higher than our current pay rate, they will be moved to the top step of the pay band. The employee will progress through the contractual wage steps in accordance with the time frames dictated in the wage addenda.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of employment and wage information at the time of offer of employment.
Background Investigation
Must pass a police background investigation. Convictions or admission under diversion programs for drug related offenses are potentially grounds for dismissal.
Physical
Final appointment is contingent upon passing, not more than 120 days before appointment, a job-related medical examination which includes a drug screen and cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness testing. Vision without correction must be a minimum of 20 / 100 in EACH eye. Corrected, vision must be a minimum of 20 / 40 or better, in EACH eye. Must not be colorblind . Failure to meet designated standards will result in elimination from appointment to the Fire service.

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including current city employees seeking transfer, promotion, demotion, etc. into a classified position.
Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
