Job Summary:
To perform basic, entry-level mechanical repairs. Perform the duties of a mechanic involved in inspecting, repairing, fabricating, oil changes, tire repairs, wash vehicles and equipment, housekeeping of shop, greasing equipment, rebuilding and maintaining Street, Police, Fire, Building, Water, and Sewer, Facility Maintenance light and heavy-duty equipment, the ability to perform heavy manual labor. Work special hours as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Master Mechanic. This position is authorized to operate city equipment and vehicles and is considered a safety-sensitive position.
Specific Duties:
- Perform basic, entry-level mechanical repairs on light and heavy equipment such as trucks, loaders, rollers, graders, bulldozers, excavators, and tractors.
- Perform the duties of a mechanic involved in hands-on repairs and maintenance of vehicles.
- Attends training when required.
- Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods, in all types of weather,
and under various working conditions.
- Perform bumping, painting, heating, drilling, bolting, oil changes, tire changes/repairs
- Maintaining proper safety procedures.
- Respond to the repair request.
- Wash vehicles and equipment.
- Record daily work in the Maintenance Shop and maintain the Shop and keep it clean and organized.
- Perform related work as required.
- Coordinate parts runs; maintain sufficient parts inventory.
- Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written communications in English
- Ability to operate commercial telephones and various office equipment such as a
calculator, copier, fax machine, computer printer, etc.
- Ability to withstand work indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures.
- Ability to work when exposed to fumes, dust, chemicals, and loud noise.
- Ability to lift, pull and push up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stoop, twist, and stand for extended periods of time during vehicle
inspection and performing repairs.
- Ability to climb under and over vehicles for inspection and repairs.
- Ability to use, read and comprehend vehicle diagnostic computer equipment.
- Wash and clean administrative and other vehicles.
- Attend meetings and classes as identified by the City of Dayton.
- Perform other duties as required.
Physical Demands:
The work can be repetitive and physically demanding, requiring frequent bending, kneeling, heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling.
Required Education, Degrees, Certificates, and/or Licenses:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Class C or higher Texas Driver’s License.
- Basic knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used to maintain and repair various types of heavy equipment and other power-driven equipment and tools.
- Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Skilled in the operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the repair of trucks
and heavy equipment.
