Description

Purpose

The purpose of this classification under general supervision is to supervise a Grounds Maintenance crew in the quality care of athletic fields including irrigation, fertilization and aeration with attention to safety. Employees in this classification perform supervisory work; and coordinate and communicate with various coaching staffs for scheduling of maintenance before and after athletic events. Position is responsible for preparing reports, maintaining schedule for subordinate personnel and responding to customers and other department calls. Performs related work as required.

Education; Training and Experience

High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience in turf management; preferably working on highly maintained athletic fields or golf courses. Bachelor’s Degree or associate’s degree in Turfgrass Science/Management; Agronomy; Horticulture; or related field strongly preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess valid State of Florida Driver’s License. Must possess or obtain within 12 months of hire - State of Florida Public Applicator License; State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Best Management Practices (BMP) certification and State of Florida Commercial Fertilizer License.

May require valid State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). May require additional licensing certifications depending upon department/division requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Supervises several maintenance positions in the quality care of athletic fields including irrigation, fertilization and aeration with attention to safety.

Supervises work crews in the performance of technical work within the division such as Maintenance Supervisor I, Maintenance Workers and Equipment Operators in care and maintenance of athletic fields and similar tasks involving manual labor operations.

Planning and execution of the maintenance practices for the athletic fields and other turf areas at a high-level year-round.

Communicate effectively and openly with peers, staff, contractors, vendors and individual coaching staffs.

Maintain working knowledge of integrated pest management practices.

Monitor fields and coordinate with Superiors in any event of noticeable symptoms.

Maintain good inventory practices of all necessary materials and related equipment.

May perform other grounds related tasks and duties as needed.

Assists subordinates in the performance of assigned work.

Ensures jobs are completed correctly and safely.

Trains and instructs subordinates; initiates disciplinary measures and incidents.

Gathers cost estimates for purchasing.

Maintains materials needed for work and crews; prepares schedule for equipment for safety and repairs.

Attends Supervisor staff and safety meetings.

Investigates and handles citizen complaints and requests.

Assists in the preparation of budget information.

Coordinates special event projects.

Prepares inventory and supply information; prepares work reports; processes all bills and statements.

Conducts all shipping and receiving of materials.

Performs computer input in areas such as finance data and divisional records.

Maintains working knowledge of new materials.

Requires the ability to calculate compute summate and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Utilization:
Requires the ability to start stop operate and monitor the functioning of equipment machinery tools and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Ability to operate vehicle, car, truck, utility vehicles, mowers, trimmers, tractors and related equipment, front loaders, forklifts and chemical sprayers.

Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as maps manuals and handbooks.

Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition subtraction multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to utilize principles of fractions; ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning:
Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability:
Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing stooping kneeling crouching and crawling and that may involve the lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors:
Tasks may risk exposure to heat, cold, toxic agents/chemicals, noise, humidity, dust, machinery, hazardous equipment, lifts, tractors, front loaders, chain saws, mowers, forklifts and violence.

The work performance of supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:

Knowledge of Job:
Has considerable knowledge of the methods procedures and policies of the City of Daytona Beach as such pertain to the performance of the essential duties of Chemical Program Applicator. Has considerable knowledge of principles and practices of supervisory work. Has considerable knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Clearly understands the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Has considerable knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the department as such pertain to work responsibilities. Knows how to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel as well as any external entities with which position interacts. Large scope understanding and performance of various cultural practices needed to maintain athletic fields and surrounding areas including but not limited to: irrigation fertilization aeration. Ability to plan and determine material requirements for athletic fields. Working knowledge of the maintenance of sports fields, cultural practices, characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers, herbicides/pest control methods and irrigation systems. Ability to lead and communicate with others involved in the maintenance of athletic fields. Motivated and independent work ethic.
