Description
The purpose of this classification under general supervision is to serve as an advisor coach assistant instructor and/or official for recreational activities. Employees in this class are generally given primary responsibility for the planning, organizing, conducting, officiating and supervising of a program for a designated activity or age group. Position is distinguished from that of Recreation Worker by greater experience and independence and the ability to perform administrative support functions relevant to assigned area. Performs related work as required.
Drug Screening
NOTE: This position requires a drug screen. If applicant did not receive drug screening upon initial hire with the City; applicant will be required to submit to drug screening prior to accepting this position.Education; Training and Experience
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by six (6) months previous experience that demonstrates ability to work effectively with a targeted age group and/or recreational activity; preferably at the level of Recreation Worker.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
May require additional training and/or certification contingent upon the targeted age group and/or recreational activity as assigned (i.e.; water safety training; first aid certification).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Receives and records fees for programs/activities records revenues accepted and maintains responsibility and accountability for petty cash where assigned.
Advises, coaches, assists, instructs and/or officiates special interest recreational activities such as tennis, archery, athletic leagues, arts and crafts.
Plans, organizes, conducts, officiates and supervises programs or activities for designated activity or age group (i.e. pre-school school age, teen age, adults, senior citizens, disabled); attends meetings regarding programs and activities.
Maintains routine records related to activities and functions as assigned (i.e. accident reports, safety reports, daily activities, maintaining ledgers and inventory of equipment).
Functions in a lead capacity in performing routine general maintenance work in caring for assigned facility and/or recreation areas (i.e. washing work surfaces, cleaning floors, cleaning furniture, washing lavatories, pickup up debris, raking leaves, sweeping courts, replacing nets).
Monitors safe conditions for participants spectators and the general public.
Administers basic first aid when indicated.

Equipment Machinery Tools and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment machinery tools and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as department records, reports policy and procedure instructional materials.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition subtraction multiplication and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain fumes, temperature and noise extremes, toxic agents, violence and/or disease.
PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
The work performance of non-supervisory personnel of the City of Daytona Beach is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein:
Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledgeable of the methods policies and procedures of the City of Daytona Beach as they pertain to the performance of essential duties of a Recreation Leader. Has considerable knowledge of principles and practices of planning organizing conducting instructing advising coaching and/or assisting with one or more assigned recreational activities/programs with a targeted age group of the community. Has considerable knowledge of the laws ordinances standards and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Has considerable knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Clearly understands the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Has considerable knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the department as such pertain to work responsibilities. Knows how to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel as well as any external entities with which position interacts.
Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility. Maintains high quality communication and interaction with internal and external entities with whom the position interacts.
