The City of De Pere is seeking a Mechanic.  This position will maintain, diagnose, repair, and overhaul City owned vehicles, trucks, and heavy and light duty mechanical equipment, including diesel and gas engines.

The City of De Pere may hire at either the Mechanic or Senior Mechanic level, depending on experience and qualifications.

Salary: Depending on qualifications, plus excellent benefits package.
             Mechanic:               $29.19 - $35.03 per hour
             Senior Mechanic:   $31.61 - $37.94 per hour

The City of De Pere rewards employees for exceptional work performance with a pay for performance incentive program.  Employees may be awarded a salary increase, bonus, or paid time off for exceptional work performance.  Employees will be automatically enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS), a pension plan to help provide for financial security during retirement, which consists of employer and employee contributions.

Typical Work Schedule: The normal work schedule is Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., plus additional hours as needed for emergencies and snow plow operations. The City of De Pere recognizes the importance of its employees having a proper work-life balance and supports alternative work schedules (i.e., four 10-hour days or five 8-hour days). In addition, new employees receive three weeks of vacation time and four floating holidays per year beginning on the first day of work (prorated the first year).

The following duties are essential for this position.  However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive.  To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may also be required or assigned.

  • Perform inspection, analysis, removal, disassembly, reconditioning and replacement of parts and assemblies including engines, transmissions, differentials, suspension, hydraulic, steering and braking systems, drivetrains and other components.
  • Remove and replace radiators and fuel tanks, clean carburetors and distributors, make controls adjustments, replace generators and spark plugs, replace injectors and pumps, test electrical charging systems, lubricate equipment.
  • Work on mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment including trucks, loaders, excavators, graders, tractors, dozers, conveyors, mowers and other types of road construction, maintenance and snow and ice control equipment.
  • Utilize computer software and systems, diagnostic tools and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot equipment problems, detect machinery or equipment failures.
  • Read and interpret service and parts manuals, schematics and other technical and reference publications.
  • Research, source and order repair and replacement parts and supplies. Maintain records of work orders, labor, and materials used on each job.
  • Maintains and repairs hand tools, power tools, lift equipment, power equipment and diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintain work station and other assigned areas in an organized and safe condition.
  • Ensure personal safety by use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensure others’ safety by use of screens and shields.
  • Respond to field service calls, perform repairs in remote locations.
  • Perform minor welding, cutting and fabricating.
  • Inspect and prepare new equipment for use, provide instructions to users on operating and service requirements.
  • Road test vehicles and equipment after service or repair, complete and submit service records, complete work orders.
  • Perform maintenance of City building facilities as assigned.
  • Assist other City departments as needed, including snow plow operations, leaf pick up, etc.
  • Ensures all activities are carried out in a safe manner; adheres to all City safety regulations; ensures equipment is safely maintained.
  • Reports all accidents to the appropriate authority.  Follows all policies for reporting, investigating, and follow-up of equipment incidents, or personal injuries. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Practices and methods used in automotive mechanics.
  • Gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, pumps and valves, generators, and welding. 
  • Electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and manual equipment systems and controls.
  • Drivetrain systems and components, undercarriage, wheels, tires, suspension systems.
  • Lubricant, systems fluids and fuel specifications, properties and applications.
  • Heating and air conditioning systems and lighting systems.
  • Legal load limits for assigned equipment and vehicles.
  • Trade tools, equipment, materials, and techniques used in automotive maintenance.  
  • Computerized diagnostic hardware and software.
  • Safe operations of heavy-duty trucks and equipment. 
  • Care and use of equipment and tools utilized in the performance of department functions.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) purpose, use, and maintenance.
  • Safety precautions and potential hazards encountered in vehicle maintenance activities.
  • Occupational hazards (OSHA) and safe work practices. 
Skill in:
  • Operating and maintaining all assigned vehicles or equipment.
  • Hazardous Materials identification and emergency response protocols, Federal and State regulations.
  • Self-starting and being motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Being trustworthy and honest; taking accountability when appropriate.
  • Applying problem solving, logic and reasoning to determine solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.  
Ability to:
  • Handle multiple tasks at once and take on a diverse range of tasks.
  • Be highly dependable with a history of consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Work as a member of a team.
  • Comprehend policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; construction plans and specifications, SDS sheets, safety manuals, technical manuals, schematics, maps, etc.
  • Maintain accurate records of assigned activities.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, temperatures, job sites, uneven terrain, noise, dust, etc.
  • Observe, follow instructions, and complete assignments accurately and within deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with business representatives, elected officials, department heads, the public, and other City employees with courtesy and tact.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Utilize a computer and required software.
  • Work the required hours of the position and respond after hours as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Mechanic:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.  Successful completion of post-high school coursework in automotive mechanics or mechanical trades.
2. Two years of experience with automotive equipment, light to heavy truck and/or off-road equipment.
3. Welding experience preferred.
4. Valid unencumbered Wisconsin Class "B" Commercial Driver's License, with air brake restriction lifted, and safe driving record preferred.  Must obtain within 24 months of hire.

Senior Mechanic:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.  Successful completion of post-high school coursework in automotive mechanics or mechanical trades.
2. Ten years of experience in heavy truck and/or off-road equipment. 
3. Welding experience required.
4. Valid unencumbered Wisconsin Class "B" Commercial Driver's License, with air brake restriction lifted, and safe driving record.  Ability to obtain "N" (tank vehicle) endorsement within six months of hire.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.
  • Work is frequently performed in a noisy environment around mechanical equipment.
  • Work may include outdoors in seasonal weather extremes.
  • Exposures could include toxic chemicals, seasonal temperature extremes, and other possible unknown hazardous materials.
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and following directions.
