SALARY: $ 16.00 per hour – part time
MINIMUM AGE: 18 years of age
HOURS OF WORK: 28 hours per week - Work schedule is to be determined on a monthly basis according to the needs of the department but will be subject to mandatory call-in outside of normal working hours.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is limited-sworn authority work enforcing State laws and local ordinances governing animal control within the jurisdiction of the City. The employee performs mobile patrol, responds to complaints and performs related duties. The work is performed under general supervision of a Sergeant; however, the employee is expected to exercise independent judgment. The Officer provides City ordinance enforcement to include animal control related matters but also parking enforcement and various ordinance related matters. All applicants considered for interview must pass a background investigation.
- Operates marked police animal control vehicle, patrolling a designated area to identify unlicensed or stray animals; responds to animal (dead or alive) related citizen complaints and requests for assistance.
- Responds to animal threats to public health and safety by extracting or capturing animal at scene; loads animal or carcass into vehicle and transports to shelter or other location as appropriate.
- Conducts animal control investigations; questions owners, violators and complainants, identifies witnesses, secures or photographs related evidence of animal attack, owner abuse or other violation.
- Issues warning, citation or court summons; prepares evidence for presentation in court; testifies in the prosecution of violators.
- Performs office related functions including answering telephone and greeting visitors, radio dispatch of road officers, Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) System queries, record maintenance and computer entry.
- Prepares periodic manual and computer generated reports of animal control activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Ability to operate city vehicle in a safe and prudent manner obeying all traffic laws and general orders.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and to learn assigned tasks, applicable rules and procedures readily.
- Strong verbal skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse public in a respectful and professional matter.
- Ability to prepare written and computer generated reports and records as well as testify in court.
- Ability to make regular rounds on foot or by vehicle, depending on the assignment.
- Ability to withstand adverse weather conditions and endure these conditions depending on the assignment.
- Must be able to pursue, restrain and lift animals (alive or dead) which may exceed 100 lbs.
- Physically able to bend, crawl and stand for an extended period of time.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must submit to a criminal history background check, drug screen, and physical. Possession of and maintain a valid Michigan driver license, good driving record.
