DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK:
This position is responsible for performing a full range of maintenance and repair work on City vehicles and equipment. The employee repairs steering, braking, hydraulic, electrical, lighting, air conditioning, suspension, and related system components of vehicles and equipment.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Fleet Mechanic I and II: Associate’s degree; or, High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and 2 years of related experience; or, all required certification(s); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Fleet Master Mechanic: Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; or, Associate’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or, all required certification(s) and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Fleet Mechanic I: Possession of a valid State of Michigan commercial driver license class B or Class A TIP (must obtain Class A CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months of hire). At time of application must have a minimum combination of any 6 valid State of Michigan or ASE Automotive or Heavy Truck Repair Certifications. Must be certified in and maintain 1, 2, and 4 automotive areas and 3, 6 and 1 or 2 heavy truck areas by the State of Michigan and/or equivalent certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) within 12 months of hire. Fork Lift Operator Certification (must obtain within 6 months of hire).
Fleet Mechanic II: Possession of a valid State of Michigan commercial driver license class B or Class A TIP (must obtain Class A CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months of hire) and be qualified on all equipment serviced by the Central Garage or its designated contract repair facility. Must be certified in and maintain 1, 2, 4, and 7 automotive areas and 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 heavy truck areas by the State of Michigan and/or equivalent certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Fork Lift Operator Certification.(must obtain within 6 months of hire).
Fleet Master Mechanic: Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver license, commercial driver license class A with Brake Endorsement and be qualified on all equipment serviced by the Central Garage or its designated contract repair facility. Must be certified in and maintain 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 automotive areas and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 heavy truck areas by the State of Michigan and/or equivalent certification by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Fork Lift Operator Certification (must obtain within 6 months of hire).
