The Human Resources Department will be establishing a Promotional
- Eligible Register for the position of Driver Engineer.
All Firefighters in the Fire Department with at least two (2) years continuous service as Firefighter with the Fire Department in the two (2) years immediately preceding Wednesday, January 15, 2025 are eligible to compete for this promotion.
Any Firefighter who has had discipline imposed from the Appointing Authority within the past twelve (12) months preceding the date of posting will be automatically disqualified from competition in the promotional process.
Current City of Decatur employees who meet the promotional eligibility criteria above, may request to participate by submitting an online application , and attaching a current resume, with any other applicable supporting documents (transcripts, degrees, etc.) by January 29, 2025 . If you are unable to attach these documents with your online application , you may submit them to the HR Department by January 29, 2025.

This position drives, operates, and maintains fire equipment and apparatus to mitigate fire and other emergency incidents. This position carries forward the duties, knowledge and skills associated with the Firefighter position.
Major Duties
Drives and operates fire apparatus to safely arrive at emergency scenes and non-emergency events. Engages and operates pumps, pump pressure regulators, valves and water movement equipment at fire suppression scenes, calculates and regulates pump discharge pressures through a variety of hose lines and nozzles.May act as incident commander at emergency scenes and direct operations until relieved by superior officer.Performs daily apparatus checks, inspections and testing to ensure the safe and reliable operation of assigned vehicle. Performs troubleshooting and minor maintenance, and may assist on major repairs, to resolve problems. Reports mechanical failures when assistance or repair is warranted.Maintains, inspects and repairs tools and equipment mounted on assigned apparatus; conducts routine maintenance on equipment and performs minor repairs.Conducts, or assists with, annual periodic testing of pumps, hoses, apparatus, and equipment; tests fire hydrants.Maintains current knowledge of city streets, geography, and water system.Participates in continuing education and advanced training sessions in emergency response activities and techniques; including the proper use of assigned equipment and related tools.Trains and mentors assigned personnel; maintains related records.Participates in providing information and educational programs to the public; conducts station tours.Maintains a variety of records; prepares required reports; prepares correspondence.Participates in station and ground maintenance work.Performs related duties.Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions in order to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with three years' experience or service.Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission including Apparatus Operator, Aerial Apparatus Operator and other certifications as assigned.Possess and maintain, current or acquired, State of Alabama NREMT EMS certification.Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in modern firefighting.Knowledge of the purposes, uses and operating characteristics of engines, ladders, and a variety of other emergency and non-emergency vehicles, equipment, tools, and apparatus used in firefighting and other response duties.Knowledge of the principles of fire service mechanics, hydraulics, and mathematics as related to equipment operation duties and in providing effective fire stream flows from fire pumps for hoselines and aerial ladder devices.Knowledge of street and hydrant locations within the assigned district and the city.Knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices.Knowledge of emergency medical principles and practices.Skill in responding to emergencies and effectively performing fire suppression, EMS, Hazardous Materials response, and associated mitigation and rescue work.Skill in the safe and effective operation of firefighting apparatus and equipment.Skill in providing effective fire stream flows from fire pumps and in effectively operating aerial ladder devices.Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, computers and software.Skill in preparing clear and precise reports using the records management system.Skill in oral and written communication.Skill in interpersonal relations.Paramedics Allowance Eligibility Requirements
A paramedic allowance may be paid to specific eligible fire personnel unless they are in an otherwise non-practicing or inactive paramedic status or under disciplinary action. Paramedic Allowance eligibly guidelines are as follows :
Must hold and maintain an active Paramedic license through the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians to function as a paramedic.Must complete the required training and educational hours currently set forth by the Alabama Department of Public Health and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians during each licensure period as administered through the Fire Department to properly maintain licensure.Must provide evidence of active licensure in good standing upon request.Supplemental Information
