Residency
The Transit Utility Worker position is covered under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) collective bargaining agreement. AFSCME employees shall reside within 50 miles of the corporate limits of City of Decatur. An appointee may reside outside said limits but must comply no later than 90 days after the completion of the six-month probationary period.

- Vehicle Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean city vehicles, including buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned. Perform preventive maintenance tasks on City vehicles and equipment.
- Fueling and Fluid Checks: Fuel city vehicles and check fluid levels for buses, cutaways, vans, support vehicles, and other assets as assigned.
- Assistance and General Labor: Assist Transit Fleet Mechanics as needed. Perform general labor tasks at the transit fleet maintenance facility.
- Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and maintain standard repair and maintenance work reports.
- Knowledge of practices, procedures, materials, and equipment used in transit fleet maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of standard manual work tools.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public, including in challenging situations.
- Physical strength and agility to perform strenuous manual tasks for extended periods.
- Capability to work under adverse weather conditions.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in custodial or general laborer work or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Possess, or obtain with six months, a valid Illinois Class "B" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
- Ability to pass pre-employment and random Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol testing.
The examination process will consist of the components listed below. The combination of the written examination and oral interview will constitute 100% of the final examination score.
- Written Examination Applicants will be required to take a written examination tailored to this position. Applicants are required to score at least 70.00%.
- Oral Interview Applicants passing the written test must pass an oral interview with a minimum score of 70.00%.
- Veteran Points Applicants passing the written test and oral interview may be eligible to receive 5.00 veteran preference points added to their final examination score.
- Seniority Points Applicable persons passing the written test and oral interview will receive 0.50 seniority preference points for each full year of continuous City of Decatur AFSCME service. A maximum of 10.0 points may be added to the final examination score.
