GENERAL PURPOSE
Provide emergency medical care to citizens in a professional manner while maintaining a high level standard of care.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general supervision from the EMS Lieutenant. Reporting chain of Command will be the following:
  • EMS Lieutenant 
  • EMS Captain
  • EMS Chief
  • Director of Emergency Services

NoneESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Lead and participate in the provision of pre-hospital emergency medical care according to established medical standing orders provided by the Medical Director.
  • Assist and coordinate with other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations.
  • Perform triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the Basic and Advanced Life Support level. Provide continuing care and treatment while en-route to an emergency medical facility and monitor and report changes in patient condition.
  • Under medical direction and following prescribed standing orders perform a variety of invasive and non-invasive therapies including but not limited to assessment and evaluation of the ill and injured, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, administration of drugs, agents and solutions, intubation  and  pulmonary  ventilation,  drawing  of  blood samples  for  analysis, application of dressing and bandages, control of shock, and immobilization of fractures, and all other skills contained within the Department of Transportation manual of knowledge objectives for Paramedics.
  • Lead and participate in training classes for the public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid, and emergency medical techniques.
  • Lead and participate in public health screenings.
  • Employ safe lifting and moving techniques.
  • Act as a preceptor for EMS students.
  • Operate radio communications and medical telemetry equipment.
Ability to:
  • Learn the geography of local area.
  • Think and act quickly in emergencies situations, and judge situations and people accurately.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Prepare concise and comprehensive written reports, while remaining within commonly accepted standards for grammar.
  • Work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation.
  • Correctly administer therapeutic drugs and solutions.
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment.
  • Be on call 24 hours when necessary.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Respond to directions from supervising personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain sufficient personal health and physical fitness to perform all job duties.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
  • Daily inspections and stocking of EMS response units.
  • Semiweekly restocking of EMS supplies at each station.
  • Maintaining ambulance cleanliness.
  • Maintaining order in response personnel quarters at assigned station while on duty.
  • Public relations activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years EMS field experience, preferably with a 911 provider.
  • Must have valid Texas Department of Health EMT-Paramedic certification or license.
  • Must have valid Advanced Life Support Certification of provider or higher.
  • Must have valid Basic Trauma Life Support Certification of provider or higher.
  • Must have valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification.
  • Must have valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification of provider or higher
  • Must have valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification of provider or higher
  • Must have valid Basic Trauma Life Support Certification of provider or higher
  • Must have a valid Texas Department of Transportation Driver License "Class C" or higher.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
Must maintain yearly CE hours within current TDSHS guidelines. Must exercise professional initiative to stay current with new drugs and treatment procedure guidelines. Must maintain ability to carry out standing orders within Medical Director's discretion.

  • Medical characteristics of various drugs and solutions.

  • Vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Record keeping procedures and methods of documentation.
  • All applicable local, state and federal regulations.
  • Infectious disease universal precautions and decontamination of ambulance and equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Flexibility to work a variety of different shifts based on staffing needs.

  • Climb multiple flights of stairs.
  • Lift patients of 200 pounds or greater.
  • Lift a 200 pound patient loaded stretcher from ground level to load position.
  • Work in enclosed areas.

The work environment may include scenes with hostile environments and/or violent situations where police presence may not be available and high risk potential of bio-hazardous exposures.

Entrance into chemical production locations where chemical exposure have occurred and require medical treatment may occur frequently.

Work environment conditions will include crime scenes, scenes where unstable emotional situations are present by patients or family members and conditions where personal safety may be challenged.
