General Purpose

 

Provides Basic and Advanced emergency medical care, including medical evaluation, treatment, and stabilization of non-critically and critically sick and injured. 

 

Supervision Received 

Reporting chain of Command will be the following:

  • EMS Shift Lieutenant
  • EMS Captain
  • EMS Chief
  • Director of Emergency Services

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Lead and participate in the provision of pre-hospital emergency medical care according to established medical standing orders provided by the Medical Director.
  • Administer intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, transdermal, and oral mediations.
  • Document all medical calls and treatment provided in the department's selected EHR/EPCR system.
  • Assist and coordinate with other emergency service agencies in rescue operations, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergency situations.
  • Drive ambulance units to scenes and/or transports to receiving facilities.
  • Perform triage and a variety of emergency medical treatments at the Basic and Advanced Life Support levels.  
  • Provide continual monitoring of the patient's condition, changing the course of treatment as needed.
  • Maintains equipment; checks, reports, and replaces damaged and used supplies/equipment; cleans the EMS station.
  • Must be able to work varying shift work, including holidays and weekends.
  • Must be able to work during man-made and natural disasters.
  • Provide citizens of Deer Park and surrounding communities with emergency medical care and transportation to hospitals.
  • Receive technical and functional supervision from EMS Management Staff.
  • Lead and participate in training classes for the public on cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid, and emergency medical techniques. 
  •  Lead and participate in public health screenings. 
  •  Employ safe lifting and moving techniques.  
  • Act as a preceptor for EMS students.
  • Handle radio communication during emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Ability to

 

  • Learn the geography of the local area.
  • Think and act quickly in emergency situations, and judge situations accurately. 
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Prepare concise and comprehensive written reports while remaining within commonly accepted standards for grammar.
  • Work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation.
  • Correctly administer therapeutic drugs and solutions.
  • Be on call 24 hours when necessary.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Respond to directions from supervising personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and those contacted during work.
  • Maintain good personal health and physical fitness to perform all job duties.

         

Peripheral Duties

 

  • Daily inspections of EMS response units.
  • Daily stocking of EMS response units.
  • Weekly re-stocking of EMS supplies at the station.
  • Maintaining ambulance cleanliness
  • Maintaining order in response personnel quarters while on duty.
  • Public Relations activities as assigned.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Minimum of 2 years EMS field experience, preferably with a 911 provider.
  • Valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification.
  • Valid PHTLS or ITLS Certification. 

 

Required Licenses, Certifications

 

  • Must have a valid Texas Department of State Health Services EMT-P or LP
  • Must have a valid Texas Department of Transportation Driver's License
  • Must have a valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification
  • Must have a valid CPR Certification.
  • Each individual must qualify and be re-certified prior to the end of their certification period.

 

Continuing Education

 

  • Must maintain yearly CE hours within current TDSHS guidelines. Must exercise professional initiative to stay current with new drugs and treatment procedure guidelines. Must maintain the ability to carry out standing orders within Medical Director's discretion.

  • Approved medical protocols, standing orders, policies, and procedures.
  • Techniques of proper drug administration.
  • Emergency medical techniques.
  • Medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Medical characteristics of various drugs and solutions.
  • Emergency driving techniques.
  • Vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Record-keeping procedures and methods of documentation.
  • All applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Infectious disease universal precautions and decontamination of ambulance and equipment.

 

Special Requirements

 

  • Flexibility to work various shifts based on staffing needs and to meet a minimum number of shifts/hours as determined by Department management.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:
    1. Climb multiple flights of stairs.
    2. Lift patients of 200 pounds or greater.  
    3. Lift a 200 pound patient loaded stretcher from ground level to load position 
    4. Work in enclosed areas.

  • The work environment may include scenes with hostile environments, violent situations where Police presence may not be available and high risk potential of bio-hazardous exposures.
  • Entrance into chemical production locations where chemical exposure have occurred and require medical treatment may occur.
  • Work environment conditions will include crime scenes, scenes where unstable emotional situations are present by patients or family members and conditions where personal safety may be challenged.

  • Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral panel interview and reference check; job related tests and field agility test and DOT physical required.
