What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Fleet Manager position at City of Deerfield Beach?
The purpose of this position is to supervise fleet maintenance operations and provide direct leadership for fleet technicians, ensure that fleet maintenance staff are productive and safe while providing service to our internal customers. Acts as the Fleet Manager in his/her absence. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

- Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Fleet Management division and its employees.
- Performs mechanical duties as needed.
- Maintain professional competence through continuing education and other appropriate learning programs.
- Provide consultation and assistance regarding specific matters within identified area of expertise to assigned staff.
- Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
- Maintains work area and shop in a clean and orderly manner.
- Reviews driver repairs and other maintenance work and repairs and prepares work order documents.
- Assists with gathering time records for payroll purposes.
- Monitors inventory of replacement parts and restocks as needed and works along with the Inventory Coordinator as required.
- Works with the Fleet Manager for maintenance of records; obtaining estimates and appraisals; requisition and control of materials, tools, and parts; schedule and coordination of outside repairs; review and authorization of invoices, and preparation of status reports, work orders, equipment inventory reports, and other reports as needed or required.
- May assist with emergency calls and repairs.
- Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies and safety regulations.
- Acts as the point of contact for all equipment operators and drivers with maintenance issues.
- Creates and submits reports as necessary and assigned.
- Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent or completion of a vocational training program in the area of automotive or heavy equipment mechanics.
- Four (4) years of experience in vehicle and equipment repair, service and/or maintenance including prior managerial or supervisory or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or B state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Master ASE Certification for Heavy Duty Trucks and Master ASE Certification for Light Duty Vehicles.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Underground Storage Tank Operator's Certification preferred.
- Knowledge of heavy-duty truck engines, fuel systems, electrical systems, brakes, air conditioning and heating, transmissions and hydraulics.
- Knowledge of the operation and use of related equipment and tools, mechanic’s tools, lubrication and fluid service equipment, drill press, fork lift, hydraulic press, battery tester, and pressure washer.
- Ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as safety regulations, work orders, equipment maintenance and repair manuals, and diagrams and schematics.
- Ability to use Fleet Maintenance software effectively and produce meaningful reports from same.
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to adapt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned workloads and priorities.
- Ability to perform advanced level diagnostic procedures.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluations of information and interpretation of data.
- Keen ability to get along with people and form a highly safe and productive work team.
- Ability to produce high levels of productivity from a team or technicians.
- Ability to provide own tools, as required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 75 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
