The purpose of this position is to operate automotive and related equipment and perform manual or semi-skilled tasks involving street, utility, work and construction projects. Depending on level and area of assignment, may operate light or heavy equipment. Responsible for performing tasks of normal difficulty involving the safe operation and routine maintenance of assigned equipment. Tasks at times are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful.
This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:- Operates a variety of light and/or heavy equipment used in street and stormwater, maintenance and repair. Equipment may include: pick-up truck, backhoe, forklift, brick cutter, sweeper, trencher, motor truck, excavator, backhoe, sewer vacuum truck, dragline, aerial platform truck, bucket truck, bulldozer, sludge trailer, street sweeper, front-end loader, , gas powered sweeper, bobcat, roller, rototiller, sod cutter, chainsaw, blower, edger, trimmer, jackhammer, drill, other hand or power tools, etc.
- Performs minor repairs and normal preventative maintenance and servicing on equipment. Visually checks equipment and reports maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and the end of the workday, assuring equipment is properly equipped, serviced and cleaned.
- Performs semi-skilled, manual, and/or laboring tasks using hand tools and power tools either separate or in conjunction with equipment being operated or tasks being performed.
- Participates in routine and construction of various utility facilities, and other City infrastructure as needed.
- Loads and unloads materials on trucks; transports employees, materials, tools and/or equipment to and from appropriate locations.
- Responds to emergency calls and repairs, complaints and inquiries from the public. May be on call 24 hours a day to respond to emergency calls. (Utility Maintenance employees are assigned to a mandatory call out on a revolving two-week schedule.)
- Attends meetings as required.
- May train employees and volunteers.
- May instructs crew members in proper work procedures, safety, and equipment operation; explain project assignments.
- May perform work in confined space rescue

- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years of experience operating light duty construction and maintenance equipment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class B state commercial driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Knowledge of the practices and methods of street, utility (water and sewer), and maintenance work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Skills in the operation of heavy-duty construction and maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of the hazards involved in heavy construction work and the appropriate safety precautions. An employee working with lime sludge requires a basic understanding of motors and pumps and the ability to run the equipment in a safe, responsible manner.
- Ability to use or repair small equipment.
- Ability to train others.
- Ability to understand and communicate safety procedures.
- Ability to maintain accurate and legible records, using computers as necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
