What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker PT position at City of Deerfield Beach?
The purpose of this position is to performs semi-skilled and skilled work involving: the maintenance of cemetery, grounds, streets, utilities, athletic fields and general maintenance of City and community facilities. Duties are contingent upon assigned department. This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Wednesday - Saturday 7:00am - 2:00pm (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)

- Perform manual and/or laboring activities and general maintenance tasks in area of assignment.
- Depending on area of assignment may operate, or assist with the operation of a variety of power tools, light and/or heavy equipment, and motorized vehicles.
- Perform routine grounds maintenance activities such as mowing and edging lawns, planting and trimming hedges.
- Layout, plant, trim, weed, fertilize and apply mulch to flower and landscape beds.
- Clean graffiti from City streets and structures.
- Clean sidewalks, awnings, City buildings and recreation facilities as needed.
- Secure various City facilities as needed.
- Set up chairs, tables, and other equipment for activities as needed.
- Assist street maintenance crews in removing and compacting earth with shovels, clearing debris, picking up litter, and carrying tools and equipment.
- Clean and sanitize City beach.
- Assists in general work orders.
- Load and unload materials on trucks; transport employees, materials, tools and/or equipment to and from appropriate locations.
- Ensure availability of needed materials and supplies.
- Visually check equipment and report maintenance or repair problems at the beginning and the end of the workday, assuring equipment is properly equipped, serviced and cleaned.
- Dig trenches and install pipes as applicable.
- Respond to public complaints and correct any discrepancies.
- Identify safety issues, correct all discrepancies and report all activities to immediate supervisor.
- Assist in the preparation of facilities for special events and 24-hour emergency callouts as is applicable.
- Construct, repair, and maintain baseball, softball, soccer, and other types of athletic fields as needed.
- Keep a logbook of all activities at each system as is applicable.
- May perform work in confined space rescue.
- Attend meetings as required.
- Provide customer service to the public.
- Lays out burial plots according to maps.
- Communicates with Funeral Directors and families as needed.
- Operate heavy machinery needed for the site preparation of the burial locations.
- Check grave markers list and supervise the placement of markers
- Inspects grounds, facilities, and equipment routinely to determine the necessity of repairs or maintenance.
- Drives vehicles to city sites.
- Keeps logbook of all staff activities as is applicable.
- May perform work in confined space rescue.
- Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
- Six (6) months of experience in general construction, building and grounds maintenance, or mechanical trades or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, and tools used in construction, grounds maintenance, utilities, or routine painting work.Â
- Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures, and regulations applicable to work being performed.Â
- Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in ground maintenance.Â
- Knowledge of the proper methods and procedures used in cleaning work areas and equipment.Â
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials.Â
- Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.Â
- Ability to take oral and/or written instructions.

- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
