Summary
Responsible for installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of all electronic and specialty equipment installed in city vehicles to include 2-way radios, wireless modems, DC to AC inverters, battery chargers, and other electronic equipment. Assists Responsible for assisting with programming 2-way radios and other communications equipment.
Essential Functions and Other Important Duties
Essential Functions:
- Installs, programs, upgrades, maintains, troubleshoots, and modifies various emergency equipment hardware and software in city vehicles.
- Analyzes and troubleshoots various technology installed in city vehicles.
- Maintains and perform preventative maintenance on various communications equipment with the city and city vehicles.
- Supports the 24/7 operations of Police, Fire and Electric Utility.
- Driving to and from job site up to 50%.
- Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High School Diploma or GED equivalency
- Three years cumulative experience in the following: electronic communications, fiber optic maintenance and networking experience
- Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for installation and troubleshooting purposes.
- Knowledge of IP addressing on computers, switches, and cameras.
- Demonstrate proficiency in use of complex test equipment.
- Ability to follow troubleshooting procedures and make recommended repairs in the field.
- Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers.
- Ability to plan and organize.
- Ability to read and perform basic mathematical computations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and coherently using verbal and written form of the English language.
- Strong technical aptitude for learning new applications functionality, configuration, and maintenance processes.
- Ability to independently resolve technical matters that have a noticeable impact on operational activities.
- Completion of an approved electronic trade school
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification
- General Communications Technician 1 & 2 (GCT 1 & 2) certification
- Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
- Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification
- Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required
- Must meet the Civilian Hiring Standards of the Denton Police Department
- Must pass a physical examination.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to differentiate colors.
- Must be able to respond to emergencies at all times, by being placed on call or standby duty
- Must be able to work above normal heights; 10-60 ft. using safety equipment
- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision and the ability to adjust focus and to identify basic colors of fiber strands.

The essential functions of this position require the use of various hand tools, test equipment, network analyzers, fusion splicers, and optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDR). Also requires the use of safety equipment, including hard hats, safety eyewear, and ear protection.
