Distinguishing Features of the Class
Teaches lifeguard candidates in preparation for American Red Cross lifeguard certification. Assists the Recreation Program Supervisor with all duties necessary to provide a safe and effective lifeguarding course and aquatic facility.

- Skills in effective lifeguard class instruction.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of organized recreation activities;
- Knowledge of recreation programming;
- Ability to provide regular and predictable attendance.
- Ability to work with and develop rapport with various groups, particularly youth;
- Ability to recognize potentially hazardous situations and to intercede in a quick and calm manner to correct such situations;
- Ability to take direction from supervisors and to exercise sound judgement in enforcing facility rules;
- Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports and to follow written and oral instructions;
- Ability to evaluate potentially serious conditions and exercise sound judgment and decision-making;
- Ability to remain mentally alert at all times.
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED;
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must have current First Aid, CPR and AED certification. *
- Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard and American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification. *
- Current Certification cards must be present before employment
- Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen.
- Valid class C driver’s license is required when work assignment requires said certification and/or involves driving a vehicle.
- Attends and participates in initial training and in-service training for lifeguard and aquatics staff.
- Instructs group lifeguard course in level appropriate skills.
- Evaluates lifeguard course participants.
- Performs daily safety check in pool and deck areas.
- Maintains an attentive lookout for potential accidents in the swimming pool and surrounding facility and appropriately checks any problems.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes and work cooperatively to provide quality customer service and positive public relations.
- Assures records of daily course attendance and skills checklists are appropriately documented and maintained.
- Assists with the emergency action plan and emergencies.
- Assures accident/injury, problem, incident, rescue and in-service training reports and records are appropriately documented and maintained.
- Enforces pool rules & regulations of conduct for swimming pool.
- Notifies the Recreation Program Supervisor of any emergencies, problems or conflict.
- Performs related work as required.
