Major Duties
- Opens and closes assigned recreation facility in accordance with schedules.
- Monitors facility usage to ensure compliance with city and department policies and procedures.
- Prepares attendance reports; completes security checklists.
- Empties trash receptacles.
- Answers telephone and greets visitors; provides information and assistance; resolves problems.
- Sets up meeting rooms for events and programs.
- Mops, sweeps, and vacuums floors.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms; restocks supplies.
- Inspects athletic and other equipment of maintenance and repair needs.
- Issues and collects recreational equipment.
- Inspects facilities and reports maintenance and repair needs to supervisor.
- Documents any accidents or incidents or failure to adhere to set policies.
- Assists with the registration of participants for recreation programs.
- Assists with off-site events as needed.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of custodial maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
- Skill in interpersonal relations and dealing with the public.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Recreation Center Manager assigns work in terms of detailed and specific instructions. The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and upon completion for accuracy, adequacy, and adherence to instructions and established guidelines.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include department policies and procedures. These guidelines are clear and specific.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of directly related site supervision and maintenance duties. Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise and maintain an assigned department facility. Successful performance contributes to the safety of the public.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office, at recreation facilities, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of safety devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and
- Experience in recreation is preferred.
- Possession of current/active American Heart Association First Aid certification is preferred.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION/DEMOTION/TRANSFER
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid operator driver license and acceptable driving record. (PBA 9/10/01)
- Must obtain/maintain CPR certification within one (1) year of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer.
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- An applicant for this position is subject to a criminal history background check pursuant to the following statutes: §§38-13-1. Ala. Code (1975) et seq., as amended by the Child Care Safety Act (Act of Alabama #2018-278), Act of Alabama 2019-322, or §41-27-10, Ala. Code (1975).
- Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12).
- Must meet the City of Dothan's employment physical standards which include drug/alcohol testing.
