Description
This position is responsible for managing Tennis Center operations, programs, and tournaments.
Major Duties
- Supervises the facilities and personnel for the Westgate Tennis Center.
- Coordinates and oversees public tennis events, including high school matches, USTA local, state, regional, and national tournaments.
- Hires, trains, assigns, directs, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.
- Manages and reviews budgets for the Tennis Center; approves and makes purchases.
- Researches and make suggestions for improvements and large purchases.
- Reviews bank deposits and completes internal financial paperwork.
- Manages and participates in the maintenance of clay tennis courts.
- Manages the overall maintenance of the Tennis Center.
- Oversees the maintenance of a variety of tools and equipment.
- Manages the day-to-day operations of the Tennis Center, including the provision of customer services.
- Completes reports and makes presentations to the Recreation Board, City Commission, and City Manager.
- Communicates and maintains relationships with other tennis organizations such as Dothan Country Club, Azalea Swim & Tennis, etc.
- Performs related duties.

- Knowledge of USTA operations, rules, and procedures.
- Knowledge of the maintenance and repair of clay tennis courts.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Assistant Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.
Guidelines include US Tennis Association guidelines, court maintenance guidelines, state purchasing laws, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
The purpose of this position is to manage city tennis facilities and programs. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to the public.

Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, representatives of other organizations, vendors, representatives of outside tennis organizations, USTA, national, state, local, contacts, and the public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, limbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited* college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management, Public Administration or a closely related field; and
- Two (2) years recent experience in the leading of tennis lessons, tennis programs, tennis tournaments, tennis facilities and grounds; or any combination.
- Two (2) years recent experience with clay courts preferred.
- Possession of a current/valid CPR/AED certificate from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association preferred.
- Possession of a current/valid United States Tennis Association Safe Play Certification preferred.
Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
