Description

The City of Dublin is hiring! We are now accepting applications for seasonal employment (Summer 2025) at The Wave. Interested individuals are strongly encouraged to apply early. This recruitment is open until filled and may close at any time without notice once sufficient qualified applications have been reviewed. The 2025 Summer Water Park season runs from May 10, 2025 to September 1, 2025. The expected start date for this position is May 10, 2025.

Swim Assessments for Lifeguard / Swim Instructor

Swim tests and interviews will be conducted on-site at the job fair on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Please bring swim attire and be prepared to take the swim tests. The two assessments below will be evaluated by an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and participants must pass BOTH assessments to qualify for the position and for the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification class (provided by the City of Dublin prior to start date).

Sw im-Tread-Swim Sequence

  • Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Timed Event : Must complete within 1 minute, 40 seconds

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
  • General Purpose :

    To perform lifeguard duties in enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct; perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques. To provide instruction in all levels of American Red Cross swimming certification and other aquatics programs.

    Supervision Received and Exercised :

    Receives immediate supervision from assigned supervisor and functional and / or technical supervision from higher-level technical personnel including Recreation Coordinator.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The following duties are normal for this classification. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, including ensuring orderly conduct of swim team and pool patrons.
  • Assist in providing instruction and coaching for a variety of swimming classes and activities for all ages and ability levels.
  • Assist swimmers who are in distress and administer a variety of first aid and / or life saving techniques, as appropriate.
  • Assist in maintaining pool areas in a safe and clean condition.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans for swimming classes.
  • Maintain accurate records related to swimming classes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Training and Experience :

    Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

    Education : There is no educational requirement for this class; equivalent to completion of two years of high school is desirable.

    Experience : Demonstrated experience in skilled aquatic activities is desirable.

    Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements :

  • At time of hire, must be 15 years of age or older.
  • Any offer of employment to an adult who will have direct contact with minors is conditional upon submission of a completed fingerprint screening and a satisfactory background check.
  • Current certification in American Red Cross CPR or the Professional Rescuer with AED; Lifeguard Training with Administering Emergency Oxygen; First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (California Title 22) within one year of employment; Water Safety Instructor (WSI) is desirable.
  • This classification is designated as a Mandatory Reporter; Completion of Mandated Reporter training is required within one month of employment.
  • Knowledge of :

  • Basic instruction / training techniques.
  • Use and care of lifesaving techniques and equipment used at public swimming pools.
  • Ability to :

  • Develop and implement lesson plans for swimming instruction and certification activities.
  • Instruct and train patrons in a variety of swimming skills and techniques.
  • Learn and enforce City swimming pool rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Perform lifesaving strokes according to American Red Cross standards, perform lifesaving and emergency first aid techniques and practices; engage in physical activity.
  • Follow written and oral instructions. Communicate in an effective manner;
  • Communicate in an effective manner.
  • Exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with pool patrons.
  • Deal with difficult or stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Other Necessary Requirements

    Physical Standards :

  • On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports and instructions, observe, identify, and report operational problems.
  • On an intermittent basis, sit in lifeguard station for long periods of time; stand, walk, and bend while monitoring various swimming activities; squat, climb, kneel and twist intermittently when setting up various programs; perform various swimming techniques; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.

    Other than statutory law, AB1522 (CA Paid Sick Leave law), there are no benefits for part-time, temporary / seasonal positions. The City does not participate in the Social Security system except for a mandatory Medicare contribution. In lieu of Social Security, the City will contribute 1.5% of the employee's salary on the employee's behalf to the PARS Alternate Retirement System.

  • Job offers are conditional until your American Red Cross First Aide and CPR / AED for the professional rescuer certification classes are successfully completed. This is a job requirement certification, failure to complete these courses will disqualify you from the hiring process. The City of Dublin will pay for the instructor, supplies, and certification. All certification classes will take place at The Wave (4201 Central Parkway, Dublin). Select ONE of the following American Red Cross course that fits your schedule. All sessions of your selected course must be attended in order to receive your certification(s). There will be NO makeups or transfers once your class has begun.

  • Class 1 : March 29, 30, April 5, 6 (Saturdays & Sundays), Time : 9 : 00 AM - 4 : 30 PM (1-hour lunch break)
  • Class 2 : April 8-11 (Tuesday - Friday), Time : 10 : 00 AM - 5 : 30 PM (1-hour lunch break)
  • Class 3 : April 26, 27, May 3, 4 (Saturdays & Sundays), Time : 9 : 00 AM - 4 : 30 PM (1-hour lunch break)
