Position Summary

Approximate Hours: Monday-Thursday 8:00-4:00pm and Friday 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

General Summary: Plan, supervise, and lead the Summer Teen Empowerment Program (STEP) at the Multicultural Family Center. Empower teens in impactful ways. The ideal candidate will empower teens for a successful future, build meaningful and healthy relationships with others while fostering a safe and inclusive environment, and have passion for impacting in teenagers' lives positively.

The STEP Supervisor will supervise the day-to-day application of the empowerment curriculum and implement learning activities; plan and facilitate the achievement of learning outcomes related to Social Emotional Competencies, while structuring and planning activities related to financial literacy, social justice, environmental education, and community service, under the direction of the Teen Empowerment Coordinator.

Job Duties

  • Further develop a basic curriculum and utilize to help create engaging learning activities for teenagers going into grades7 -12.
  • Provide guidance, leadership, mentorship, and coaching to teenagers as needed.
  • Organize and schedule daily activities, events, field trips, and guest speakers from the community members and city departments.
  • Use engaging platforms such as technology to engage teenagers in their daily learning.
  • Provide counsel, comfort, and encouragement to all teens.
  • Redirect teen behaviors using Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies and Trauma Informed Care approaches when de-escalating.
  • Use social media such as TikTok or Facebook to enhance program plans, activities, and use it to recruit in new teenagers and promote current events.
  • Ability to empathize with the struggles teenagers will face and provide tools to work through the challenges that arise.
  • Ability to individualize daily instruction and activities based on individual teenager needs.
  • Ensure accuracy and manage confidentiality of documentation, data, reports, and records.
  • Assist the Teen Empowerment Coordinator with scheduling and training AmeriCorps members and volunteers.
  • Implement policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Act as a functional supervisor and directly supervise and lead a team of AmeriCorps members during live programming.
  • Conduct AmeriCorps members performance evaluations in collaboration with the Teen Empowerment Coordinator

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Child & Youth Development- Understanding that all children, youth, and teenagers develop at different rates and daily learning needs to be adapted for each teenager based on where they are in their development.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Professional experience working in culturally diverse populations. Sensitivity to the traditionally marginalized communities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across cultural differences.
  • Social Perceptiveness - Understanding people's reactions and being able to empathize to the needs of traditionally marginalized communities and community members.
  • Administration and Management- Knowledge of management principles involved in strategic planning, leadership technique, supervision, training, performance evaluation, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Critical Thinking, Judgement, Decision Making, Problem Solving, and Negotiation-Thinking about the pros and cons of different ways and options to solve a problem and picking the best one. Noticing a problem and figuring out the best way to bring a teenager and adult or other teenager together to solve the problem.
  • Flexibility- Able to adapt and modify daily instruction or daily plans based on predicted and unforeseen circumstances, always have a backup plan for extra time
  • Communication skills- be comfortable talking to large groups of teenagers, ability to engage diverse groups of people in a conversation and maintain professionalism while doing so.

Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, crawl, be able to stand or walk for extended periods
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.
  • Occasionally be exposed to wet and humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions.
  • The typical noise level in the work area is moderate.

Qualifications



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or supervisory experience
  • Experience working with diverse populations

REFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College level coursework from an accredited college or university in Education, Sociology, Social Work, Cross Cultural Studies, Psychology or related field
  • Experience supervising and coaching employees or volunteers
  • Experienced educator or experience working with teenagers
