About the Facilities:
Located at the Durango Community Recreation Center, our Aquatics Center is home to two pools, one 11-lane lap pool and one zero-depth leisure pool, as well as a 23-person hot tub and outdoor splash pad. The lap pool features public swimming lanes and one-meter and three-meter diving boards. The leisure pool features a current channel/lazy river, vortex, 160-foot waterslide, two lap lanes, and a shallow area with play features for children. Our aquatics staff also works shifts at Lake Nighthorse’s Swim Beach & Wibit Aqua Park during the summer months.
- Supervise daily operations of the Recreation Center aquatics area and Lake Nighthorse swim beach, including maintenance and repair of pool systems and equipment. Perform lifeguard duties as needed to support safety and efficiency across all aquatic facilities.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate aquatics staff.
- Manage scheduling, work assignments, and employment actions in line with department policies.
- Verify that staff maintain proper certifications.
- Maintain adequate staffing for all shifts, including coverage during scheduled time off, absences, or call-ins.
- Develop and implement a variety of aquatics programs, recreational activities, and special events.
- Oversee maintenance of pools, filtration systems, and water chemistry to meet safety standards.
- Implement and monitor the pool chemical control program.
- Monitor and maintain facility equipment, troubleshoot issues, and carry out preventative maintenance.
- Manage the swim lesson program and coordinate American Red Cross training programs.
- Order supplies and manage inventory for daily operations.
- Provide exceptional customer service and build positive relationships with community members and program participants.
- Serve as “Manager on Duty” on a rotating basis, overseeing daily operations of the Durango Community Recreation Center.
- Serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergencies outside regular business hours as needed.
A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in recreation, physical education, leisure studies, sociology, communications, or related field. Four years of progressively responsible experience in recreation services, including one year in a supervisory role. Possession of or ability to obtain the following certifications: CPR/AED and First Aid Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) Lifeguard Instructor Trainer Water Safety Instructor Trainer Instructor Trainer in CPR/AED and First Aid A valid state driver’s license.
Familiarity with state, federal, and local laws and regulations related to aquatics, including the Model Aquatic Health Code. An understanding of aquatic safety procedures and the ability to apply them to prevent accidents and protect lives. Experience working with aquatic facility systems, including commercial pool equipment, pumps, and chemical maintenance. Skill in leading, coaching, and training staff to support a positive and effective team environment.
