If you share our passion for managing vital water resources, bring your skills and talent to Durham!The Laboratory Coordinator provides analytical support to the Water Supply & Treatment Division of Water Management. Using established protocols, the Laboratory Coordinator will provide Wet Chemistry analysis in accordance with State and US EPA guidelines to ensure water quality testing for the division meets all established rules and regulations. Responsible for sample collection (distribution system, treatment plants, and source water); responds to customer complaints; provide analysis and associated sample preparation; preparing regulatory reports; maintain and calibrating laboratory equipment; performing housekeeping duties associated with the operation of a water process control laboratory. participate in laboratory safety; and provide input on special projects managed by the laboratory. Duties / Responsibilities Collects at a minimum of 90 Total Coliform samples throughout the distribution system monthly. Sampling and testing is conducted in all-weather conditions.Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment; performs housekeeping duties to clean work areas; decontaminates, cleans, sterilizes and / or discards instruments and equipment; and performs basic maintenance related duties.Samples, tests, and analyzes results from field samples; test samples to determine water quality throughout the various treatment processes; and source water facilities.Monitors inventory levels to ensure adequate availability of laboratory chemicals and supplies and makes recommendations to order supplies as needed.Prepares regulatory and other reports to document and report test results; compiles information; proofs and reviews work for accuracy and completeness.Meets with the public in their home or business to address water quality concerns.Assists in the review / updating of the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures; and assist with laboratory safety.Trains operational staff on the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures to ensure proper use of laboratory equipment and sample analyses.Minimum Qualifications & Experience Associate's degree or equivalent in environmental, physical or natural sciencesThree years of related experience.Must have a valid, unrestricted, North Carolina Class C driver's license "or" if you currently have another state driver's license, be willing and able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of start date.Ability to report to work in adverse weather conditionsMust be willing and able to respond to call-back duty, if neededCustomer Service experienceThe following certifications are not required at time of hire, but must be obtained within two years of employment : NCWOA Process Control ChemistryNCWOA Total and Fecal Coliform Additional Preferred Skills Bachelor degree in chemistry, biology, environmental, physical or natural sciences, and three years of related experience.Benefits - General Full-Time Employees 12-13 paid holidays per year 13 standard work days of vacation per year 13 standard work days of sick leave per year, which accumulates indefinitely; sick leave may be used toward early retirement 2 weeks paid military leave per year Medical, dental, vision, and supplemental life insurance plans State and City retirement plans Short and long term disability plans Paid temporary disability leave for specified conditions City contribution of 13.6% into the N.C.
