Salary : Anticipated hiring range : $29.23 - $31.01

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Mows and maintains park, open space areas such as playgrounds, basketball courts, passive and active parkland, baseball and soccer fields; roadway / right of way landscape areas or streetscape areas, mows, and weeds; cleans and maintains tennis courts and nets; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
  • Conducts synthetic field maintenance. Activates include trash removal, sweeping, dragging, adding, and replacing crumb rubber and other synthetic turf needs. Coordinating field turf surface repairs as necessary.
  • Drags ball fields; lines fields for games. Prepares and maintains dirt infield surfacing as well as grass outfields. Repairs fencing, bleachers, and other items related to the ballfield.
  • Inspects, washes and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms. Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs.
  • Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades.
  • Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
  • Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Seeds, fertilizes, top-dresses, conditions soil and waters, and controls pests and weeds in the City's parks, open spaces, streetscapes, and general landscaping. Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
  • Operates tractors, mowers, jackhammers, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe building and grounds maintenance techniques.
  • Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises. Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
  • Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs and prepares facilities for use by these programs.
  • Assists in constructing new park facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
  • Participates in snow / ice removal for parks, building access, sidewalks, trails, and other areas as necessary.
  • Keeps records of work completed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilitie s

  • Working knowledge includes operating and maintaining small equipment in grounds maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and manual tasks of the area assigned.
  • Knowledge of traffic safety principles.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance procedures.
  • Ability and skill to drive and operate mobile equipment safely and correctly.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of utility markings, clearances, and rules for safe equipment operation near underground and overhead utility facilities.
  • Knowledge of construction industry safety rules and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
  • Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely near vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers, and utilities.
  • Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in organizational and time management to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work products while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out local policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, and Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Ability to perform detailed work accurately and independently in compliance with stringent time limits with minimal direction and supervision.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports consistent with the position.
  • Ability to communicate concisely and effectively in English with staff, administration, and the public in both written and verbal form; Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Ability to define problems, exercise sound judgment, and address various situations.
  • Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations.

  • Desired Minimum Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Washington Driver's License.
  • Clean driving record.

  • Work is performed daily both in and or under all weather conditions and includes exposure to inclement weather, noise, equipment and vibrations, airborne materials, active construction sites, and traffic.
  • May require dealing with persons who are hostile or aggressive, posing threatening conditions.
