Under the supervision of the shift staff sergeant/sergeant, or detective sergeant with oversight by the public safety captain and broad oversight by the director of public safety, attends the designated police, fire, and medical first response academies in preparation to become a public safety officer.  

May perform a variety of administrative duties, training, housekeeping and maintenance chores, and related work as required while waiting to attend and attending various academies.  

It is expected that your employment will continue after graduating from the police, fire, and medical first response academies and passing the licensing exams for each discipline. After graduating from the police academy or fire academy and passing that academy’s licensing exam, the public safety recruit will be promoted to public safety officer.

  • Prepares to be a public safety officer through assignments, training, observation, and working with all sworn staff.
  • Learns and maintains operational knowledge of all departmental orders, policies, and procedures, and maintains in a current condition all manuals issued.
  • Provide great customer service by greeting and assisting visitors by receiving, screening, and directing phone calls. Respond to routine resident and customer inquiries and assist the public with a broad range of department issues and needs.
  • May function as a public safety clerk when needed and understands all aspects of the public safety clerk position.
  • Assists the captain, detective sergeant, shift sergeants, and public safety officers, and school liaison/community officer. 
  • Serves as a liaison between the public and the department. Provides general information regarding department operations and policies. Resolves issues independently and coordinates more complex issues with the department director or other staff as needed. 
  • May provide general administrative support for the department. Prepares standard and advanced correspondence, documents, forms, and reports. Compiles data, prepares reports, and performs research. Maintains absolute confidentiality of sensitive information, personnel data, and matters of policy or decision making. 
  • Provides general clerical support for the department. Enters data and information, schedules appointments, sorts, distributes, mails, files, copies, and scans documents.
  • Does ride-a-longs with public safety officers.
  • May function as a school crossing guard as required. 
  • Prepares and maintains required records and reports.
  • Participate in fire prevention inspections.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the care and upkeep of firefighting equipment.
  • Maintains and displays thorough knowledge in the application of motor vehicle laws and ordinances including revisions and relevant court decisions.
  • Develops and maintains driving skills in the operation of departmental vehicles in non-emergency situations consistent with applicable laws and Departmental orders/policies.
  • Any other duties assigned by the Director or designee.

  • Prefer 60 college credit hours but must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Not less than 18 years of age.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation. 
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to successfully complete the MCOLES reading and writing exam.
  • Must pass the MCOLES physical fitness pre-employment test no more than 180 days prior to starting a police academy.
  • Other MCOLES minimum requirements reference the following standards: physical ability, hearing standards, psychological fitness, vision/color standards, training requirements, licensing exam, fingerprinting, oral interview, and drug testing. http://michigan.gov/mcoles
  • Physically and psychologically fit for duty.
  • United States Citizen 
  • Ability to complete an MCOLES training course and obtain licensing.
  • Ability to obtain firefighter I & II certification.
  • Ability to obtain medical first responder license.
  • Ability to develop proficient use of handgun, shotgun, and patrol rifle
  • Proficient in the use of computers, word processing, spreadsheets, and various databases. 
  • Displays skill in reading and authoring written reports and communications relevant to work performed.
  • Ability to exhibit calm and controlled composure in stress and non-stress encounters with subordinates, citizens, and groups to resolve conflict and manage crisis.
  • Ability to be trained – and become proficient – in the use of handgun, shotgun, and patrol rifle.
  • Driver’s license and satisfactory driving record and the ability to maintain one throughout employment.
  • Physically capable of passing a pre-employment firefighter physical agility test.

The work is performed in a variety of settings – including but not limited to – in the office and outdoors. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Frequently, the employee works near moving mechanical parts and in outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance; taste, smell or lift more than 100 pounds.  

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, run, climb fences and ladders, and subdue or take into custody assaultive subjects. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers, office equipment radios.
