HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Supervised by: Public Works Superintendent

Supervises: No Supervisory responsibility

Position Summary:

To perform manual labor and a variety of skilled and semi-skilled activities involving public works, sign installation and maintenance, and tree maintenance, operate the dump trucks, back hoe, loader, etc.; to perform other related work as required.

Essential Job Functions:

An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

· Erect and repair sign posts.

· Construct, paint, erect and repair all street and traffic signs.

· Operate air compressors, spray equipment, sign machine and other equipment related to construction, installation and maintenance of traffic signs.

· Operate various sewer cleaning machines and catch-basin cleaners. Install and maintain catch basins, sewer lines, sewage lift stations, and other parts of the city sewer system.

· Operate jackhammers, trucks, and various other types of vehicles and power driven equipment.

· Perform other manual labor, skilled and semi-skilled tasks involving general maintenance activities, public works and other municipal activities.

· Operate the dump trucks, backhoe, loader, etc. and perform maintenance on streets; grading, snow removal, sweeping, patching and related.

· Excavate soils for water-sewer repairs, installations, and building footings, and general grade work.

· Mowing of road shoulders and airport areas.

· Operate sewer jet, air compressor, water tap pushing machine, air hammers, cement mixer and water pumps skillfully and safely.

· Perform any of a variety of tasks involving physical strength and agility including shoveling out fire hydrants, building manholes, laying sewer and water lines and repairing broken water mains and fire hydrants.

· Locate, replace and repair curb boxes.

· Flush fire hydrants.

· Make water taps.

· Install, read and repair water meters.

· Operate various trucks and power equipment including the pipe pusher, air compressor, low boy pipe locator, jackhammers, tapping machine and other related equipment skillfully and safely.

· Clean and perform preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles.

· Perform related work as required.

· Cemetery maintenance, including grave digging.

· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

· Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all types of weather and under various working conditions.

· Ability to learn to use various types of equipment involved in public works maintenance activities.

· Some knowledge of the operation of various tools and equipment used in public works or similar maintenance activities.

· Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public.

· Education requirements: Graduation from an accredited high school. Some experience in heavy labor and/or public works activities. Must have a C.D.L. License.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit, talk or hear. The employee occasionally must taste or smell. The employee regularly must lift and/or move moderately heavy items and frequently must lift and/or move heavy or very heavy items. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; wet and/or humid conditions; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment usually is moderate, and occasionally can be loud or very loud.

Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

Schedule:

• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
• On call
• Overtime
• Weekends as needed
