Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Performs complex equipment failure repairs and diagnoses all types of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems associated with maintenance support for other departments. Duties vary with assigned section. 

 

 
  • Inspects, diagnoses, services, repairs and performs scheduled maintenance on gas and diesel-powered heavy trucks, roads maintenance equipment, and other related equipment.
  • Performs complex diagnoses of vehicles using computer systems or manuals.
  • Repairs engines, transmissions, brake systems, electrical systems, air conditioning, fuel systems, computer systems, emissions systems, front or rear ends and components, and performs wheel alignments.
  • Performs other vehicular mechanical repairs as necessary.
  • maintains emergency vehicle’s 
  • Completes service records for work performed, including documenting labor and parts used.
  • Initiates purchase orders and issues parts, supplies, tools, and equipment as necessary.
  • Responds to emergency road assistance calls for disable city vehicles and equipment.
  • Makes recommendations for repair, modification, and disposal of equipment, tools, and vehicles.
  • Use a wide variety of test equipment. 
  • Maintains and repairs equipment related to fuel delivery and sites to ensure a clean and safe environment.
  • Refers service support to other department’s facilities as necessary, and coordinates the prioritization and completion of service of other department’s equipment. 

 

High school diploma or GED with additional vocational training or certification in automotive repair or a related field; three years of automotive repair experience including one year at the journeyman level in the repair and maintenance of gas and diesel powered heavy trucks, road maintenance equipment, and other related equipment. Must possess a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must obtain commercial driver’s license (CDL) within six (6) months of starting employment in this classification. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. 
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and engines. 
  • Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair of motorized vehicles and equipment. 
  • Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools. 
  • Skill in the use of gas and electric welding equipment. 
  • Skill in the use of mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists. 
  • Skill in the use of a variety of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment. 
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions. 
  • Ability to read manuals and schematics.
  •  Ability to rebuild engines and major driveline components. 
  • Ability to communicate with other mechanics about repair work needed. 
  • Ability to organize and coordinate the work of the vehicle 
  • Ability to determine work priorities 
 

Supervisory Controls:  The Fleet Superintendent assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks work in progress and reviews completed work for the nature and propriety of the final results.


Guidelines:  Guidelines include City codes, departmental and safety policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

Complexity:  This position consists of a variety of body repair and mechanical tasks on a variety of automobiles and equipment.

 

Scope and Effect: This position ensures the safe, effective and efficient operation of City Fleet.

 

Personal Contacts:  Contact is typically with other crew members.   

 

Purpose of Contacts:  Contacts are for information sharing and work coordination. 

 

Physical Demands:  The work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, and bending, crouching or stooping.  The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

 

Work Environment:  Most repair work is completed in a shop; on occasion, equipment repairs are made in the field which may involve hazardous conditions. The work involves considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards normally associated with general vehicle and equipment repair.


Supervisory and Management Responsibility:  None.

Salary : $48,000 - $60,000
