This position plans, analyzes, recommends, installs, and supports the City's central computer systems and network, including but not limited to, servers, routers, switches, firewalls, data and voice communication lines, operating systems and other types of software. The position provides assistance to client staff on the most difficult problems, and it participates in the design and planning of infrastructure to support new applications and technologies.
Supervisory Controls: This position is under the direct supervision of the Finance Director.
Guidelines: Guidelines include the City personnel handbook and City codes and ordinances.
Complexity: Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Work requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of guidelines, policies, standards, and precedents.
Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to coordinate and articulate strategic direction of City information systems and services. Successful implementation ensures the effective use of the latest technology throughout the City.
Personal Contacts: Contacts are with co-workers, vendors, other City departments, and elected officials.
Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are to give or exchange information, resolve problems, or negotiate and settle matters.
Physical Demands: Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Supervisory and Management Responsibility: This (IT Administrator – Network) position oversees the IT Technician, but final evaluating, hiring, promoting, and disciplining is under the purview of the Finance Director.
- Performs analysis and makes recommendations regarding server and network related equipment and software;
- Develops and evaluates options in infrastructure planning to support new applications and technologies;
- Performs capacity planning activities;
- Analyzes server and network activity and maintains performance monitoring systems as well as other software programs e.g., intrusion detection, virus scanning applications, etc.;
- Conducts product evaluations of upgraded or new hardware and software identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential benefits;
- Participates in the development of policies and procedures for use of network facilities and then ensures implementation;
- Addresses and solves the most difficult trouble-shooting tasks;
- Procures, configures, and installs server and network hardware and software;
- Supports existing servers, systems and networks;
- Occasionally directs the activities of the IT Technician;
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Considerable knowledge of computer systems;
- Considerable knowledge of office automation and computer hardware and software applications;
- Working knowledge of local area networks and wide area networks;
- Knowledge of network and computer system security;
- Ability to install and maintain a variety of systems and network servers as well as other related hardware;
