What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Service Aide position at City of Eastpointe?
The main function of the PSA is to perform non-sworn law enforcement tasks in order to free sworn officers from station duties. These functions include a wide variety of tasks associated with the reception and support function of the Eastpointe Police Department.
The role of a PSA is multifaceted and demands an excellent multitasking ability. The ability to perform many varying disciplines.
Appointments to positions in the Police Department are subject to a review of the application based on education, training and experience, a background investigation and an interview designed to evaluate each applicant’s knowledge in this field of work. The PSA will be primarily assigned to work the front desk reception area of the police department. He/she will answer routine inquiries by telephone and in person and make proper disposition or direct them to proper authorities. They will maintain forms, supplies and equipment in the front desk area. They will assist in processing, interacting with and monitoring prisoners including inquiries and accepting and processing bonds for prisoners. They will interact with officers of this and other agencies; interact with supervisors, and confirm warrants with other agencies. They will open, sort, file and route mail, products, materials and other paperwork. PSA’s will process complaints, take minor reports in compliance with field-based reporting procedures, operate various computer software and hardware and enter data into various terminals including, LEIN/NCIC. They will retrieve and process records of all types and make voice broadcasts over police radio equipment when necessary. They will handle vehicle inquiries, impoundments and releases. Additionally, depending upon work location, assignment or shift, some positions will require the performance of other essential functions and duties delegated by the Director of Public Safety or his designee.
The PSA will demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround time, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly with other officers and police agencies to provide quality seamless customer service.
The PSA will have knowledge of modern office practices and equipment; strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills; keyboarding and organizational skills. He/she must work cooperatively with the public and other city employees; be able to work for periods of time without direct supervision; maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information; learn job-related material through observation and oral instruction (this learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting); and familiarize self with the geography of the City of Eastpointe.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and by telephone, read regular and small print, view and produce written and electronic documents and enter data on a computer keyboard with repetitive keystrokes. The employee must be mobile in an office setting, stand, sit, stoop and kneel, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items of light weight and may occasionally lift and/or move items of moderate weight. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to very loud.
