JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER (SRO)

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general direction of the Chief of Police and Superintendent of Ecorse Public Schools, School Resource Officers (SRO’s) report to the Chief of Police (or his/her designee). The School Recourse Officer’s primary goal is crime prevention. This also includes, the safety of the students and facility while fostering an efficient, cohesive and positive relationship between law enforcement and the youth of our community. With limited supervision, assist Administration with implementing programs such as active shooter response, human trafficking awareness, and drug use prevention.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Assists in developing safety protocols, best practices, emergency crisis planning and building security matters. Shares information to other departments within the police to design crime prevention strategies.
2. Works in conjunction with school counselors to stay current on community resources available to stakeholders such as mental health services, substances abuse assessment and treatment providers, child protective services, shelters, domestic violence services, and family counseling agencies.
3. Conducts school-wide safety drills on a regular basis.
4. Ensures stakeholder safety by being present during school searches, which may involve weapons, controlled substances or other potentially hazardous materials.
5. Patrols school grounds, ensuring safety, looking for potential breaches of security such as unlocked doors, broken access points, views videos and watches for strangers or suspicious activity in or around the campuses.
6. Directs foot and vehicular traffic daily and for school events and monitors the loading and unloading of buses for safety.
7. Responds to all calls for services from faculty.
8. Provides weekly reports to police administration of incidents and school events to ensure proper police response.
9. Assists in conflict resolution between students or other faculty members.
10. Serves as the initial first responder and school safety coordinator for campus emergencies.
11. Monitors school hallways, enforces truancy, and other duties as required.
12. Participates in school functions, work closely with teachers to ensure they develop a working knowledge of law-related topics so that they can teach students the importance of the role of police in our society.
13. Promotes the profession of police officer and be a positive role model. Increase the visibility and accessibility of the police to the school.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
School Resource Officers are expected to effectively work together and with staff to meet the needs of the schools and the community through work behaviors demonstrating the schools and police department’s values. SRO’s are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest levels of ethics.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Law Enforcement – Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, and government regulations.
Customer Service – Thorough knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services to the faculty and students.
REQUIRED SKILLS
JUDGMENT/DECISION MAKING – Evaluates the best methods then exercises appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and resolving complex matters.
Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with faculty, students, parents and other members of the community. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual benefit.
REQUIRED ABILITIES
Communication – Ability to communicate effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs. Ability to listen and understand for positive outcomes. Ability to handle a variety of service issues with tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner.
Coordination of Work – Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Prioritizes tasks for the completion of work in accordance with sound time – management practices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically fit within proportionate height/weight requirements or pass a physical exam.
Have ability to exert moderate, though no constant physical effort.
Some lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials.
May occasionally involve heavy objects and materials.
Ability to walk (foot patrols), stand or sit for extended periods of time.
Perform coordinated movements.
Ability to distinguish colors and shades, listen and hear distinctive sounds.
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, during the night, evening or nighttime hours.
