CIVIL SERVICE

WRITTEN EXAMINATION FOR

ENTRY-LEVEL FIREFIGHTER POSITION

The City of Edinburg will conduct testing for the position of Entry-Level Firefighter. The test will be administered as follows :

DATE : Friday, February 28, 2025

TIME : 8 : 30 a.m. (doors open at 8 : 00 a.m.)

LOCATION : Activity Center

An Application may be filled out online at the City of Edinburg website :

from February 5, 2025 to February 18, 2025

Deadline to submit the application and required documents is on February 18, 2025 .

As per Local Civil Service Rules :

Entry level eligibility lists for the Fire department will expire one year after the date of the entrance examination. A new examination may be given, depending on the needs of the Edinburg Fire Department, at the end of the twelve (12) month period or sooner, if applicable.
Firefighter Applicants who possess a valid certification as a basic Firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) may be given preference regardless of their position on the eligibility list upon providing evidence of such certifications.

PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES WHO MAY NEED ASSISTANCE ARE REQUESTED TO CONTACT THE HUMAN RESOURCES / CIVIL SERVICE DIVISION AT (956) 388-1873. REQUESTS MUST BE SUBMITTED AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE EXAM SO THAT ARRANGEMENTS CAN BE MADE ACCORDINGLY.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible to take the Physical Agility / Strength and Endurance Test and the Civil Service Written Examination for Entry-Level Position Fire Fighter with the Edinburg Fire Department, applicants shall :

Be not be less than 18 years of age and not be older than 35 years of age ( Pursuant to the Texas Local Government Code, Subchapter A. General Provisions, 143.023 Eligibility for Beginning Position (c) ;

Be a high school graduate or have passed a general educational development (GED) test indicating high school graduation level. All fire fighters must be able to intelligently read and write the English language.

Have a valid Driver License and satisfactory driving record (a valid Texas Driver License and satisfactory driving record is required prior to employment as an Entry-Level Fire Fighter)

Must be a U.S. Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident Alien, or authorized by law to have U.S. residency.

Have completed and returned the enclosed documentation to the Edinburg Civil Service Director; by the deadline. No applications will be accepted after the deadline .

Meet the minimum standards set forth in the published notice and established minimum qualifications in the position classification plan as adopted by the Civil Service Commission.

Must arrive to test site 30 minutes prior to posted start time to check in. If you arrive after the posted start time you will not be allowed to test.

An applicant may not be certified as eligible for an Entry-Level position with the Fire Department unless the applicant meets all legal requirements necessary to become eligible for future licensing by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).

Texas Administrative Code; Title 37 Public Safety and Corrections; Part 13 Texas Commission on Fire Protection; Chapter 421 Standards for Certification; Rule §421.3 Minimum Standards Set by the Commission.

A COPY of the following MUST be submitted along with your application via email by deadline to :

1. Valid Driver's License (State of Texas)

2. TCFP Certificate (If you are already a Certified Firefighter only)

3. DD214 Member 4 Form with an Honorable Discharge (If you are a Veteran only)

Applicants will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and / or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.

Applicants must also take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.
