A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SIGNAL TECHNICIAN
As a Signal Technician, you spend your day doing installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal control equipment and devices. Your work typically is to perform troubleshooting electrical problems, programming of various types of computerized traffic signal controllers, signal timing, maintaining loop detectors and cameras. Your job is essential to the city, and you often assist in troubleshooting in the field and restores operation to traffic signal control devices that have undergone electrical, electronic equipment or electrical wire / cable failure due to vehicular accidents, vandalism, adverse weather, or construction crews. You are constantly on your toes and ready for any new and unexpected challenges that may arise in the city. This can include performing evaluation of conditions of street signs inside of city limits. When you are not out in the city, you generally perform wiring of control cabinets prior to field installation. You enjoy being helpful and have no problem providing assistance and support to other divisions within the department as needed. The city needs someone like you with assisting in maintaining accurate records of time and materials used in the maintenance of traffic lights and you finding genuine enjoyment in what you do!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SIGNAL TECHNICIAN
- High school diploma, GED or equivalency
Education Preference : Community college, vocational business, technical, or correspondence school certificates from IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) are likely sources.
Preferred : Three (3) years' experience in related fields
