About this Position
The Traffic Engineer Intern I is a non-supervisory role with responsibility for assisting the engineering department in the management of the traffic signal systems, traffic engineering studies, and required data collection and other duties, as necessary. They will work the alternative schedule, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 am to 11:30 am on Friday.
Responsibilities
- Monitor Traffic Corridors in real-time using Automated Traffic Management Software (ATMS)
- Collect and analyze raw data from ATMS and recommend appropriate changes to signal system
- In the absence of the Senior Transportation Engineer, monitor Traffic Management Operators for conformity with standards
- Input citizen requests for service data into the citizen response system
- Conduct traffic studies based on requests
- Follow-up with the citizens to discuss results of studies and any action taken
- Prepare traffic engineering studies in conformance with the federally approved and state-adopted manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Review engineering plans from consultants, preliminary plats, and plans for commercial and residential developments
- Develop and maintain computer-coordinated signal timing plans
- Prepare traffic accident reports
- Prepare schedules of work or data collection of speed studies, accident studies, and traffic volumes
- Abide by safety rules and conform to safety guidelines
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related field
- 4 years of related experience and/or training
- Or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Passing score for the NCEES Fundamentals in Engineering exam (preferred)
- Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
Necessary Skills
- Knowledge of federal and state design practices and procedures for traffic signal location and timing
- Knowledge of federal and state policies as they relate to the MUTCD
- Ability to use Microsoft Office 365 and GIS software
- Ability to master the maintenance of complex modeling and analysis software within a reasonable period of time
- Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
- Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug and audio screenings
