About the Position

The Veterinarian will work as part of Edmond Animal Services, which is a branch of the Special Services Division of the Edmond Police Department. The Animal Services Unit is responsible for assisting the community with issues involving both wild and domestic animals. The future Veterinarian will work at our animal shelter (an open-intake facility that accepts surrendered pets, strays, and pets seized during criminal cases) to ensure all animals are in a safe, happy, loving environment.

The Veterinarian will assist in developing, advancing, and implementing protocols to ensure the humane medical treatment of all animals seen in the shelter, with the hope that they will be placed into the adoption program when ready. They will regularly identify and treat medical concerns in shelter animals, including performing surgical procedures as necessary.

This is a part-time position with the option to negotiate the days and times worked. They will be on-duty approximately 20-25 hours per week, with the maximum weekly allowance being 29 hours worked in one week. As a safety/security sensitive position, the new hire is subject to pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, and random drug & alcohol screening.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, treat, and prevent health problems in all shelter animals
  • Perform rabies vaccinations, sterilization surgeries, and other surgical procedures prior to animal adoption
    • They will be required to spay pregnant animals who are not in active labor
  • Guide staff during situations requiring immediate medical attention
  • Provide on-call services for shelter animal emergencies both in-person and on the phone
  • Lead the evaluation and establishment of shelter medical programs
  • Collaborate with Shelter Supervisor and Shelter Technicians to improve shelter medical objectives, practices, and procedures
  • Monitor the shelter's drug and supply inventory while meeting DEA requirements
  • Assist Animal Services Officers in examining animals, documenting findings, and compiling evidence associated with animal crime
  • Maintain a high-level of knowledge in the field by maintaining appropriate licensing and completing education courses
  • Adhere to and ensure compliance with state regulations and organization protocol
  • Intervene as needed to address any safety concerns that might put an animal, a person, or the organization at risk

    Qualifications

    • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association
    • Valid Oklahoma State Veterinarian License in good standing with the Oklahoma Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners
    • 1 year of experience in shelter medicine and small animal, high-volume, spay and neuter clinics (preferred)
    • Up to 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Eligible to obtain a Controlled Dangerous Substance License
    • Experience using computer software 
    • Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License and driving record acceptable to City's insurance carrier
    • Residence within 30 minutes of shelter location (to respond to emergency calls)

    Necessary Skills

    • Strong written communication skills to understand scientific journals
    • Good mathematical ability
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to communicate with a variety of groups, including local clinics, Edmond Police Officers, and the general public
    • Knowledge of veterinary medicine and shelter operations, with the ability to apply management techniques, safety protocols, and laws/regulations relating to animal welfare
    • Ability and willingness to work with animals that may be hostile, injured, and/or diseased
    • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds (frequently) and 100 pounds (occasionally)
    • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours
    • Ability to conduct physical examinations and surgical procedures
    • Ability to pass an investigative background process and pre-employment screenings
