Job Overview

The Cities of El Cajon and La Mesa, members of Heartland Fire and Rescue, are hiring for the position of Fire Recruit! This is an at-will, trainee-level, non-sworn, 40-hour workweek classification in the Fire series, with no safety officer powers or safety benefits. Those selected must graduate from the Academy to be eligible for promotion to the class of Paramedic Firefighter or Firefighter. Incumbency in this classification is for the purposes of completing a Fire Academy. Graduation from the Academy requires an acceptable level of competency in all academy subjects. Competency shall be demonstrated by passing all examinations, including evaluations of manipulative skills.

HEARTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE: HEARTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE (HFR) was formed via a Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) to oversee fire and rescue services for the Cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove. HFR is an ISO Class 1 fire department that serves a regional population of nearly 200,000 and receives approximately 34,000 annual calls for service across its eight stations.
125 proud, professional, and dedicated men and women make up this award-winning organization that prides itself on providing exceptional professional service. Staffed daily are nine engine companies, a Type II Urban Search & Rescue unit, two truck companies, and one squad. All HFR units provide advanced life support service in conjunction with a contracted ambulance provider. Additionally, HFR has a SWAT paramedic program, deployable OES engines, and is active on the regional US&R task force.

Qualification Guidelines
Experience: Previous work experience is not required. Previous fire suppression experience is highly desirable.
Education: Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of valid California EMT certification and County of San Diego EMT certification at time of application, and for duration of employment.
- Possession of valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR-BCH) certificate at time of application, and for duration of employment.
- Possession of valid California Class C Driver's License, and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and during course of employment.
- Possession of a valid California or National Registry Paramedic license is highly desirable.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) card is highly desirable.

Candidates must be successful in every component of the examination process to be placed on the eligibility list for employment consideration. Candidates who move forward in the pre-employment process may go through a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph examination, psychological exam and a pre-employment medical evaluation.
