What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Specialist IV - Head Lifeguard position at City of El Cajon?
- Serve as supervisor in the absence of the Recreation Services Supervisor
- Perform lifeguard duties; prevent accidents; enforce rules and regulations
- Supervise pool and locker room
- Direct and supervise participants of the aquatics programs to ensure their health, welfare, and safety
- Monitor water chemistry and ensure that the water is properly balanced in compliance with local and state regulations
- Develop publicity and promotional materials
- Provide high quality customer service and ensure that subordinate staff provide high quality customer service, including answering phones, responding to e-mail, and interacting with customers at the center
- Cashiering duties when assigned
- Process patron registration and facility permits, keep records, and write reports
- Administer and teach swim lessons under the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program, which would include the following classes: Parent-Tot, Tiny Tot, Learn to Swim Levels I-IV
- Plan and conduct special events
- Plan and conduct aquatic camps, swim team, swim lessons, water aerobics, and other aquatic programs
- Plan and conduct junior lifeguard and lifeguard classes
- Perform maintenance, and help to reduce risk of injury by completing facility inspections and enforcing policies
- Assist with coordinating staff schedules
- Assist with interviewing, training and supervising subordinate staff and volunteers
- Provide oversight and respond to non-aquatics issues at the recreation center
Possession of current certificates in: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Training, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Photocopies of both sides of required certifications must accompany employment application to be considered.
Instructor Level and/or Instructor Trainer certifications in Lifeguard Training and/or Water Safety Instructor are highly desirable.
Candidates are required to pass a physical exam (to include screening for alcohol & drugs) prior to appointment.
May be required to provide means to commute between work sites in course of work, including the use of personal vehicle during assigned shifts. May be required to possess or have the ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record.

EDUCATION:
Educational achievement equivalent to completion of or currently attending high school. Additional training in area of specialization related to aquatics is desired.
EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Qualified candidates will be evaluated for employment consideration based on an oral interview of those best qualified that will be used to rank applicants for final selection.
