Summary: Under moderate supervision, performs routine and varied unskilled and some semi-skilled tasks in maintaining parks, parkways, medians, trees, park and recreation facilities, and City properties; operates and maintains basic field equipment and assists other maintenance personnel in completing assigned tasks; performs related responsibilities as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journey-level classification in the park maintenance job series. Employees typically receive daily assignments and functional supervision from the Park Supervisor and lead direction from a Park Maintenance Lead worker given questions relating to proper work methods, work layout and the use of tools and equipment. The employee may provide functional direction to temporary employees.

Trims, shapes and removes trees, plants and shrubs using power tools or hand tools. Cleans, paints and maintains park buildings, rest rooms and recreation facilities. Patrols work areas to investigate and report water breaks, fallen trees, physical damage, and graffiti. Inspects playground equipment and adjoining areas for broken glass, dangerous objects or other safety hazards. Maintains proper water levels in lake and remove debris from waterways. Sprays or removes weeds. Picks up and dumps trash, litter and debris into vehicle hauling compartments, truck beds or drops at dump sites. Shreds and disposes of limbs, branches and large brush. Operates dump trucks, service truck, or pick up trucks to transport materials, equipment, tools and/or co-workers to and from work sites and yard areas. Operates cement mixer to mix quantities of concrete. Prepares soil and plants trees, shrubs and flowers. Installs and services sprinkler systems and equipment. Waters, drags, lines and prepares ball diamonds. Plants new tree or large plant seedlings. Paints rest rooms and park facilities using rollers and paint brushes; eliminates graffiti using chemical remover. Assists other employees in completing skilled tasks and other special work projects. Completes daily and monthly safety inspection records. May install, maintain and repair chain link fences, benches, bleachers, ball fields and rest room facilities. May repair water breaks and replace valves and lines. May use an aerial lift to work at small heights above ground level. May perform emergency maintenance work on a call-back basis.
