THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION
The City of El Cerrito Recreation Department is renowned for running high-quality, fun & safe programs for children – winning many “Best of the Bay” awards based on the high satisfaction of parents and children. The “Department of F.U.N.” manages a full range of recreational and special activities for youth, adults and seniors, and provides activities, rentals of facilities, picnic areas, sports fields and tennis courts.
Under general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, staff in this position have the opportunity to do impactful and meaningful work helping children learn and explore in engaging and interesting environments. They assist in and conduct a variety of youth recreation activities within the Childcare and Camp programs. Childcare staff are comprised of Aides, Afterschool Teachers, and Preschool Qualified Teachers that work primarily in the Afterschool programs of the local elementary schools. The staff also work in a Teeter Tots program for ages 2-4. These positions are seasonal and usually assigned up to 20-25 hours per week. Hours include on-call, substitute and part-time. Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Duties and Responsibilities:
Typical job duties are:
- Active supervision of children in childcare;
- Support the implementation of education activities and recreational activities that promote physical, mental, and social development.
- Foster a safe and stimulating environment for children;
- Interact with recreation staff, youth participants, and caregivers;
- Cordially assisting the public who have questions and inquiries;
- Presenting and maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor, including wearing appropriate attire for the position and exhibiting respect and enthusiasm as duties and responsibilities are carried out.
- Set up and take down equipment and ensure all equipment and supplies are properly stored.
- Enforce rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by Department policies and procedures.
- Complete appropriate reports and forms as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of a variety of youth development;
- Knowledge of youth activities;
- Knowledge and command of all of the latest safety standards and information related to supervision of children;
- Ability to conduct and participate in recreation activities;
- Ability to assist with related clerical duties;
- Ability to demonstrate good customer service and staff relations;
- Ability maintain physical and mental capacities appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities;
- Professional work habits including reliability, dependability, creativity and demonstration of enthusiasm; and
- Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekdays and weekends.
Experience and Education:
- Knowledge, interest, and experience in working with children.
- Units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development preferred. Transcripts required.
- CPR/First Aid Certified.
- Must be 18 years or older; Appropriate clearance from background check/finger printing
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
Additional information:
• Program runs August 19 – June 6 (many staff stay on for summer/year-round!)
• Program provides afterschool enrichment activities, snack, and homework assistance at Fairmont, Madera and Harding Elementary schools.
• All locations are in El Cerrito close to BART and the Ohlone bike trail.
• Hiring at all levels – youth work “rookies” to experienced Teachers!
• $20.39-24.79 per hour DOE
• Shifts available: 1:30-6:00pm Monday-Friday
