The City of El Cerrito is partnering with El Cerrito High School to offer an exciting opportunity for enthusiastic, compassionate, and motivated current sophomores and juniors interested in learning about local government operations. Over the course of six weeks this summer, the City will provide seven paid internship positions across various City departments, offering hands-on experience and the chance to make a real impact in our community! The program will conclude with a presentation to the El Cerrito City Council in September about what was learned during your summer internship experience.
Duration: Monday, June 16 – Friday, August 1
Hours Per Week: Internships will be 15-20 hours per week
Salary: $18.34 per hour

2025 EC Stars Internship Opportunities
City Clerk: Learn about state regulations related to public records, including city policy and retention requirements. The Intern will assist with a variety of records management tasks, including cataloging and indexing electronic records, scanning paper records, and evaluating and processing records for proper disposition. Location: El Cerrito City Hall: 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Community Development Department: Gain hands-on experience in the City’s efforts to digitize archived records through an automated system/platform. The Intern will review various documents and collaborate with Building, Planning, and Housing staff to ensure these records comply with the City’s retention policies. Location: El Cerrito City Hall: 10890 San Pablo Ave.
City Manager’s Office: Explore the role of communication in community engagement. The EC Stars Intern will work on citywide communications projects, including taking photos and videos around the city, creating social media content, and developing outreach materials to support the City’s public information initiatives. Location: El Cerrito City Hall, 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Fire Department: Get hands-on experience in a Fire Department environment. The EC Stars Intern will support the City’s wildfire prevention program, education classes, and assist with equipment maintenance and data management. ** Requires additional interview and background process. Location: El Cerrito Public Safety Building/Fire Station 51, 10900 San Pablo Ave.
Police Department: Experience the operations of a Police Department and gain insight into law enforcement. The EC Stars Intern will participate in training, assist with department activities, and complete a project focused on police recruitment and retention. ** Requires additional interview and background process. Location: El Cerrito Public Safety Building/Police: 10900 San Pablo Ave.
Information Technology (IT): Learn about the essential functions of IT in a City organization. The EC Stars Intern will assist with web research, problem and system analysis, software installation, hardware configuration, and other IT-related tasks. Location: El Cerrito City Hall: 10890 San Pablo Ave.
Recreation Department: Discover how the Recreation Department serves the community. The EC Stars Intern will assist with special event preparations, design signage and social media content, handle registrations and rosters, and help with the day-to-day logistics of summer camps and older adult programs. They will also assist office and administrative duties to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer service. Location: El Cerrito Recreation Center: 7007 Moeser Lane.
Eligible applicants must be a currently enrolled sophomore or junior at El Cerrito High School.
