What is the role?
This is the advanced journey-level classification in the Lifeguard series responsible for performing the most complex work assigned to the series. Incumbents regularly work on tasks which are varied and complex requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment. Positions in the classification rely on experience and judgment to perform assigned duties and ensure efficient and effective servicing function of the assigned program area. Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to perform the full range of lifeguarding and instructional duties required to ensure the City’s aquatic facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use. Work is typically reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements.
These positions are seasonal and assigned up to 20-25 hours per week (not to exceed 1,000 hours annually), which include evenings and weekends.

- Provides technical and functional guidance to assigned staff on an assigned shift; assists with scheduling and directing the workflow for the area of assignment; provides input related to performance evaluations for assigned staff as required.
- Trains employees in work methods, quality standards, and relevant safety precautions.
- Assists with ordering materials and equipment for the facility.
- Assists with coordinating emergency response activities.
- Assists with coordinating aquatic and safety programs, ensure proper teaching technique, test, and move participants to appropriate classes, complete end of program reports to give to participants.
- Inspects and maintains swimming and pool equipment for functionality; recommends maintenance and repairs as required; tests and monitors pool water chemistry and clarity including recording chemical levels.
- Monitors facility use; ensures that the pool, restrooms, and locker rooms are maintained in a safe, neat, and clean condition; opens and closes the facility.
- Calls and facilitates emergency services such as police, fire, or ambulance.
- Maintains logs and records of equipment and activities including incident/accident reports and training logs.
- Answers telephones and performs clerical duties including data entry for the aquatic facility.
- Assists with citywide special events and recreation department activities as assigned.
- Observes and complies with all City mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.

- Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination.
- Computers and software programs (e.g., Microsoft software packages) to conduct, compile, and/or generate documentation.
Ability to:

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
Education:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
- The minimum age for positions in this classification is eighteen (18) or completion of twelfth (12th) grade. Two (2) summer seasons of experience as equivalent to the position of Lifeguard with the City of El Cerrito.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Individuals who are appointment to this position will be required to maintain a current and valid California Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record throughout employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
- *A current and valid out-of-state license may be used upon hire and a valid California Driver’s License must be obtained within six (6) months of appointment.
- Possession of a valid Lifeguarding certification with First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer from the American Red Cross or equivalent agency, to be maintained throughout employment; or ability to obtain and complete before working any shifts.
- Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) and/or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, or equivalent, is highly desirable.
