Job Summary:
The Downtown Maintenance Specialist is responsible for the cleanliness, upkeep, and overall appearance of the downtown area. This position ensures that public spaces remain safe, attractive, and well-maintained for residents, visitors, and business owners. Duties include routine cleaning, landscaping, minor repairs, general maintenance, and serving as a liaison to the downtown business district.
As the face of the City to the downtown business district, this position requires strong communication and customer service skills. The Downtown Maintenance Specialist will interact regularly with business owners and the public, addressing concerns, providing information, and ensuring that City services meet the needs of the district.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clean and maintain curbs, gutters, and sidewalks to ensure a tidy and safe downtown environment.
- Paint curbs and other designated areas as needed to maintain a fresh and visible appearance.
- Empty public trash receptacles and properly dispose of waste.
- Pick up and remove litter from sidewalks, streets, and public areas.
- Maintain sidewalks in front of downtown businesses by sweeping and removing debris.
- Pull weeds and apply chemicals to control vegetation in designated areas.
- Inspect and perform minor maintenance on street furniture, planters, signage, and public amenities.
- Assist in seasonal maintenance tasks, such as removing snow and ice from walkways and applying de-icing materials as needed.
- Water and care for street trees, flower beds, and landscaped areas as assigned.
- Report graffiti, vandalism, or damages to public property for repair or removal.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, small equipment, and vehicles required for maintenance tasks.
- Assist with special events by setting up and taking down barricades, decorations, and other event-related materials.
- Support emergency response efforts by assisting with storm clean-up or other urgent maintenance needs.
- Follow safety protocols and procedures while performing duties.
- Perform light maintenance duties for the Civic Center and Train Depot, including exterior upkeep, trash removal, painting, and landscaping. Some indoor maintenance tasks may also be required.
- Assist with setup at the Civic Center and Train Depot as needed.
- Serve as a liaison to the downtown business district, providing excellent customer service and representing the City in a professional manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in maintenance, landscaping, or custodial work is a plus.
- Strong customer service and communication skills required.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely.
- Basic knowledge of proper chemical handling and application for weed control.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid Kansas driver’s license required.
