Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED, or higher, and four (4) years of experience in traffic control signal construction or signs fabrication, installation, or repair.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state by date of appointment. Some positions may require a Commercial Driver’s License.
Special Requirements: Incumbents of positions requiring a CDL or of a safety-sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal regulations.
General Purpose
Under general supervision oversee and perform the design, manufacture, and installation of traffic control devices.
Typical Duties
Supervise, coordinate, and assist crews in the installation of new signals, school flashers, signs, and markings. Involves: Assign and coordinate crews in the installation of new control devices. Review blueprints, electrical codes, and uniform traffic control device rules and regulations to ensure installation compliance with contract specifications and city codes. Participate in all work activities as working supervisor including operation of heavy power equipment and power tools. Perform site inspections on assigned crews and contracted work by the city or state.
Design and manufacture traffic control signs. Involves: Prepare drawings and plans for traffic installations or other control devices. Construct all traffic and information control signs. Design all traffic control signs including regulatory, warning, informational, directional, regular, and overhead street name signs. Supervise, participate, plan, schedule, assign, instruct, guide, check, and evaluate all installation and maintenance of traffic signals, school flashers, street signs, pavement marking, and striping paint crews. Issue equipment to crews including tools, paint, and chemicals. Inspect, maintain, and repair all painting equipment such as airless compressors, striping units, and grinding machines. Handle and monitor hazardous waste materials such as paint, Tulane, chemicals, and glass bead dust.
Complete administrative duties. Involves: Provide all employees handling hazardous materials utilize proper protective equipment. Procure equipment and materials. Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, materials, and parts necessary to complete work orders and assignments. Prepare quotations and specifications based on research and vendor contacts for signal heads, mast arms, signal cables, hardware for signal heads, street signs, and other materials and supplies necessary in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic control signals, flashers, and signage. Prepare material, cost, and resource analysis for budgetary projections.
Supervise assigned staff. Involves: Schedule, assign, guide, and check work. Review operational and procedural activities. Prioritize and coordinate unit activities. Appraise employee performance. Provide staff training and development. Enforce personnel rules, regulations, and work standards. Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hiring, termination, transfers, discipline, or other employee status changes.
