Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Criminal Investigation Division Sergeant, Detectives will be called upon to handle a wide variety of criminal cases in both property crimes and crimes against persons and is responsible for investigating these crimes.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) continuous years of service in the rank of police officer with the Elgin Police Department unless waived by the Chief of Police or obtained the rank of Detective in your current/previous law enforcement agency.
License and Certifications
This position requires a Valid and current Texas Driver’s License and a Basic Peace Officer Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
· Completes projects, tasks, and duties within guidelines, instructions, and timelines as established by the detective sergeant.
· Follows departmental policies and procedures.
· Investigates all assigned cases in accordance with EPD policy.
· Initiate incident reports from citizen complaints via telephone or in person.
· Obtains approval of a sergeant before presenting a search warrant affidavit to a judge.
· Consults with their supervisor on controversial, complex, or noteworthy cases and regularly updates their supervisor on the status of these cases.
· Staff’s cases with district/county attorney’s office after completed case investigation.
· Enters report supplements indicating the status of a case.
· Assists other law enforcement agencies, social service agencies, and the community with issues related to investigations.
· Acknowledges all subpoenas and appears in court prepared to testify in accordance with EPD policy.
· Notifies their supervisor immediately upon receiving an open records request.
· Assists the public information officer with the release of information pertaining to their investigations.
· Performs administrative duties as needed such as answering the phones or assisting citizen walk-ins.
· Recognizes information of a confidential nature and maintains that confidentiality.
· Obtains the approval of their supervisor prior to working overtime, compensatory time, or flex time.
· Seeks solutions to problems and identifies methods to improve efficiency.
· Seeks assistance from the patrol units regarding unique crimes and/or crime patterns.
· Carries departmental radio, duty weapon with ammunition, handcuffs and a less lethal weapon when leaving the office to investigate.
· Secures all case files in accordance with EPD policy.
· Briefs patrol officers periodically.
· Enters property into TCIC/NCIC, as necessary.
· Responds to assist patrol on any arrest or investigation when requested.
· Qualifies with duty weapon(s) and attends in-service training and other mandatory training assignments.
· Attends TCOLE training, in-service training, and other departmental training.

Interpersonal Relationships
Have a high level of social contact working closely with other office staff and the public.
Communicate with people daily by telephone, e-mail, and in person. May be subjected to irate members of the public.
Hours/Travel
This position may be required to work off-standard hours and is required to respond to call outs after hours. Employees must be available for incident work including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, on-call, and stand-by call.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions.
Work is divided between an office setting and outside events, but the duties listed may require police attire. This position requires the incumbent to have the ability to reach, bend, and move up/down, speak, and listen to customers or officers both over the phone/radio and in person. May be required to carry, hold, lift, push or pull a minimum of 40 pounds. May be exposed to dust, bodily fluids, toxic chemicals or fumes, communicable diseases, and high noise levels—occasional exposure to extreme noise, such as sirens, gunfire, and screaming. Position requires the incumbent to have the ability to hear clearly when working around crowds of people, equipment, and traffic.
Disaster Service Workers Clause
In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees’ normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
