SUMMARY:
The Pool Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the City’s Swimming Pool is operational throughout the season and is responsible for the overall direction of staff, including the enforcement of established rules, regulations, and standards for safety, and ensuring staff is always providing the highest customer service and ethical standards.
The anticipated hire date for this position is on or before April 1, 2025. This position has flexibility of lower hours between April and May, with an increase in hours during the pool season, June-September 2025.
Supervision:
Reports to Recreation Program Manager. This position has direct supervision over lifeguards and pool staff.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
HS Diploma/GED and must be at least 18 years of age. Lifeguard experience is preferred.
License and Certifications:
Valid Driver License
State approved Lifeguarding certification, including First Aid & CPR.
Preferred Lifeguard Safety Instructor (LGI) certification & CPO, or ability to obtain.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provides direct supervision to lifeguards including staff scheduling, timekeeping, performance, and feedback, and all other responsibilities for direct supervision.
· Plans, Schedules, and assigns lifeguard duties.
· Performs lifeguard duties, enforces safety rules, rescues swimmers in distress, and administers CPR and/or first aid as needed.
· Monitors and delivers Pool Program activities such as swimming lessons, swim meets and other aquatics programs.
· Demonstrates proper work methods and safety procedures to ensure work is performed in a safe manner.
· Performs administrative responsibilities including but not limited to maintaining inventory, requesting necessary supplies, documenting daily activities, and recording monies received.
· Conduct pool maintenance tasks such as testing the chlorine and pH levels and adding chemicals as required to meet state and local health department regulations.
· Performs all other related duties as required.
· Supports the relationship between the City of Elgin and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Knowledge of principles and practices of water safety, rescue methods, lifesaving techniques and first aid as it applies to accidents in the water and surrounding pool area.
· Skill in providing customer service.
· Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
· Ability to read and understand pool chemicals.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job is primarily performed in an outside setting in varying weather conditions and temperatures with exposure to pool and cleaning chemicals. The noise level of the work environment will range from low to high. Continuous Exposure to Wetness and Humidity, and occasional exposure to bodily fluids.
Interpersonal Relationships
Have a high level of social contact working closely with lifeguards, pool staff, and volunteers of all ages; ethnical backgrounds, and socio-economical status.
Hours/Travel
The Pool Supervisor must also be available to work irregular hours and at various intervals, including weekends, holidays, and evening hours.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
Ability to sit, walk, run, jump, climb up or down stairs, and ladders. Ability to stand or sit for lengthy periods and maintain specific vision requirements with or without corrections. Must be able to communicate clearly and calmly during emergencies. Must be able to reach, bend, lift, carry, push and pull a minimum of 100 pounds. May be exposed to environmental weather, noise, and hazards, including slippery concrete, body fluids, communicable diseases, dust, gases, odors, chemicals, and bacteria. May be exposed to high stressful and possibly dangerous situations.
Disaster Service Workers Clause
Always in the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, designated employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees’ normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
