What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Ocean Lifeguard I/II position at City of Encinitas?
Seasonal Ocean Lifeguards safeguard the public throughout the beach and open ocean waters; detect and rescue persons or vessels in distress; enforce beach regulations; provide assistance to beach users; teach ocean rescue techniques, beach first aid, lifeguard communications and use of rescue boards/equipment to children in the Junior Lifeguard Program; perform all related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Certificate of completion, or proof of current enrollment in "Intro to Open Water Lifeguard /Lifeguard Academy" is required
- Completed on-line City application
Required to be hired as a Contract Ocean Lifeguard I
- Minimum Age: 18 years of age by date of hire
- Valid California Driver’s License
- City of Encinitas Lifeguard Academy Training certificate, or equivalent completion of a Lifeguard Academy meeting the advanced guidelines for open water lifeguard training and standards of the United States Lifesaving Academy (USLA)
- Valid American Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder Certification or equivalent, or Valid County of San Diego Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) Certification and Valid California Emergency Medical Technician License, or Valid County of San Diego Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification and Valid California Paramedic License
- Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR) (American Heart Association “BLS Provider,” or American Red Cross “CPR for the Professional Rescuer”) or equivalent
In addition to the Minimum qualifications listed above for the Contract Ocean Lifeguard I, the following is required:
- Completion of 1000 hours of paid work as a Contract Ocean Lifeguard I with the City of Encinitas or equivalent pending the Marine Safety Captain’s review and approval.
- Valid County of San Diego Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B) Certification and Valid California Emergency Medical Technician License, or Valid County of San Diego Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification and Valid California Paramedic License;
- Personal Water Craft (PWC) Operations Certification
- Valid California Boater Card
- Lifeguard Vehicle Operations Certification
Qualified applicants will be invited to test for the position. Testing will be held on February 15, 2025 and will be by invitation only. Invitations to test will only be sent to applicants with completed application packets on file.
Testing Components:
- Swim 550 yards in under 10 minutes
- Run Swim Run (150-yard run, 250-yard swim, and 150-yard run, in under 8 minutes)
- Dummy Drag of 50 feet in 30 seconds (150 lbs.)
- CPR drill (applicants who do not have a current CPR certification will be tested on a later scheduled date)
Applicants that pass all portions of the physical and skills tests listed above will be invited to interview. Interviews will be held n the afternoon of the same day as the physical and skills testing.
